SOTR spoilers

As a Hayffie shipper (Lenore Dove rocks I just still love hayffie) I love the fact that SOTR has established that Effie is like six years older than Haymitch. Because I’ve always imagined in my head that after the rebellion the two of them get married and have babies (I know it’s not canon let me dream) and now I know that the children conversation would go something like this:

Effie: Haymitch, dear, I’ve been wondering…how would you feel about having children?

Haymitch: *bewildered* Effie you’re forty-eight.

And then Effie gets super offended at Haymitch’s implication that she’s too old to have kids, while Haymitch just gets increasingly confused because the absolute oldest woman to have kids in Twelve was forty-five when she gave birth, and he always just assumed that after that point it was impossible for a woman to get pregnant. Anyway, they still have kids with the help of fertility treatments and live happily ever after the end.

How I picture Lenore Dove

5 of my SOTR hcs:

1. Lenore Dove is taller than Haymitch. Like, significantly taller. Real Amazon vibes coming from her. She has to bend down slightly to kiss Haymitch, who has to stand on his tiptoes.

2. Haymitch may not be much of a singer, but if he’d ever tried he would make a really good banjo or guitar player, or an above average pianist.

3. Burdock never hated Haymitch, he just realized that there wasn’t anything he could do to help him. Still, he kept an eye on Haymitch from afar until the day he died.

4. Prim was reaped entirely by chance, but Haymitch will never believe that. He will always believe that Snow rigged it to hurt him. Same with Burdock’s mine accident.

5. Maysilee is a femme lesbian and had the most massive crush on Asterid.

One thing no one ever talks about in fandom is the pain of finding out one of your favorite ao3 authors is a total jerk. Writing a fic inspired by theirs while linking and giving credit, only for them to leave a comment insulting you and calling you weird for making a fic of their fic. Using the names they gave to unnamed canon characters (a common practice called fandom name sharing) and linking and giving credit, only for them to leave a comment calling you a plagiarist for stealing the names and threatening to send their fans after you. Finding out they have a history of doing stuff like this, and finding it practically impossible to separate your enjoyment of their work from your incredibly negative experiences with the author. Trying your best to avoid their fics as a result even though they wrote at least half of the fics of your favorite ship. True pain. Never meet your heroes kids.

If you could change one minor (MINOR) thing about Dungeon Meshi, what would it be?

Personally I would make Laios’s succubus look like Kabru instead of Marcille.

The real issue behind laios and shuro's relationship is that laios can't handle some one without a backbone.

Take chilchuck for example. Chilchuck has some very serious work place boundaries: Don't intervene with his work, don't talk about his family while on the job, don't treat him like a child, etc.. All of these are perfectly fine boundaries to have but they're boundaries everyone breaks. Marcile pry's into his family life, Senshi gets in the way of his work, Izutsumi basically sleeps on top of him.

Laios is the only one that respects that Chilchuck is just doing his job and he wants to do it a specific way; when laios does something stupid or ignorant chilchuck yells at him for doing so. Laios doesn't misunderstand what Chilchuck's saying because he's being clear and up front with his issues.

But shuro doesn't do that because he has no backbone, he's a coward. He's not even able to correct laios when he gets his name wrong.

He does nothing to stop the growing misunderstanding between the two that he could easily fix if he gained some courage. We only see him tell laios his problems when he at his worst, starving with barely any sleep. He's only brave when he's exhausted. And by then it's already too late. Laios yells at shuro not for not understanding him, but for not telling him the misunderstanding sooner. Because he would have fixed it, he would happily respect shuro's boundaries but he doesn't even know them. And they're more important matters now, he has to save his sister.

On why Chilchuck sticks with the party (Dungeon meshi spoilers)

So I think most people believe that Chilchuck sticks with Laios’s party after Falin gets eaten for his canonical stated reason - that he got paid up front, and needs to see things through as a result. But personally I don’t really believe that. After all, the party is now entering the dungeon on a completely different mission (to save Falin) with half their original numbers. Wouldn’t it be reasonable, even expected, to consider this a separate mission and demand separate payment as a result? I think it would be. So then why would Chilchuck, an experienced professional, go on this new, extremely dangerous mission without payment? For friendship, maybe, but I personally am of the opinion that at the beginning of the series, Chilchuck sees the others more as coworkers than friends, though this changes by the end of the series. So then, why would he go?

To answer that, we need to look at the position of half-foots in the world of dungeon meshi. Specifically, how half foots are the most disadvantaged of the human races. (Orcs and kobolds are more disadvantaged, but they’re demihumans and as a result are either ostracized or subjugated, which is a whole different issue that we’re not talking about right now). Half foots are physically the smallest and weakest race, with the shortest lifespan and second lowest mana capacity. Their only advantage is their superior senses, which while handy aren’t exactly the best for fighting against oppression. Additionally, many people see half foots as lesser, as we can gather from Chilchucks succubus bait story and other tidbits. And of those who don’t view half foots as lesser beings, many see them as being essentially children due to their appearance.

While this may not be the best comparison, I can imagine based on this that being an extremely skilled and experienced half foot would be a bit like being a black female doctor in the 1950s who graduated top of her class from Harvard Medical School. Despite your competency, you are constantly being discriminated against for something you can’t control. Top practices aren’t willing to ‘take a chance’ on you, and the only people willing to give you a shot are underperforming institutions desperate for a leg up and willing to try anything. Also, no one is willing to pay you what you’re worth and no one takes you seriously, at all. Plus, pick locking is probably one of the few industries where half foots are at least slightly respected due to their skill, meaning half foot pick locks are probably a dime a dozen, hence the need for a union. Meaning Chilchuck has to compete with tons of others in a highly competitive field for measly wages on top of everything else.

So I think this is why Chilchuck sticks with Laios. Because in the Touden party, he’s basically found a unicorn. He’s found an extremely competent, effective party, with a leader who is both willing to pay him what he’s worth and also sees him for the adult he is, as seen in the shapeshifter episode where Laios’s Chilchuck was only distinguished from the original by slightly different clothing. Granted, Chilchuck definitely sees Laios as a weirdo, as shown by his shapeshifter Laios, but he’s a weirdo that treats Chilchuck as an equal. Going back to the black doctor in the fifties comparison, it’s a bit like finding a job where you’re treated as an equal, but your boss talks obsessively about spiders and is constantly bringing chocolate covered spiders into the office to snack on. Weird, for sure, but definitely preferable to the alternative.

So in the end, I think that’s why Chilchuck really sticks with the party. Because he knows that realistically, this is the best job he’s gonna get, and it’s best he at least try to hold onto it. And also, possibly, because he feels a little bit of fondness towards the weirdo tallman who decided to give him a fair shake for once. But, that’s just my opinion. What do you all think?
