do u have any recommendations for (academic) books/commentaries on the greek myths? especially older myths but ill take anything u rec ^^

Hi hon! 🍋

Thank you for the question, and, okay, yes, I do!

[ This ] is a general link to my drive with a bunch of books I saved overtime. It should be available by clicking, I reopened access to it.

As for my favorites:

Greek Gods Abroad: Names, Natures, and Transformations (Robert Parker)

Helen of Troy: Beauty, Myth, Devastation (Ruby Blondell)

Ancient Greek Cults: A Guide (Jennifer Larson)

The Iliad (Emily Wilson)

Larson's text is more focused on the actual physical cults and religion rather than just mythology in literature without the cult base, but she does still cover some myth counterpart in it.

I know there are a lot of commentary papers/books on individual writers, if you're interested in tragedies/plays/epic cycles, I'm fairly sure Jstor offers a wide variety of those if you look up "commentary on" + name of the text you're curious about.

I've recently become very involved in Apostolos N. Athanassakis' translations and commentary because his commentary on the Orphic Hymns was marvelous, and here are some of his other works:

The Homeric Hymns

Hesiod: Theogony, Works and Days, Shield

Individual Deities & their related mythological landscape because I have more of these:

Aphrodite (Monica S. Cyrino)

Apollo (Fritz Graf)

Artemis (Stephanie Budin)

Dionysus (Richard Seaford)

Hermes (Arlene Allan)

Zeus (Ken Dowden)

To my knowledge, these are a part of a larger series written by academics specializing in Ancient Greece that includes some heroes and other Gods I might not be as interested in, check it out if you want.

A lot of these are probably somewhat familiar to you, they're usually the first things that I see recommended by others, too. I hope it was useful!

So I've been watching a lot of tiktoks about sheep care and what happens on sheep farms...and that makes me picture Polyphemus and the other cyclops doing these things to keep their sheep healthy and happy. Polyphemus carefully plucking a stuck lamb out of its mother. Polyphemus carrying around a lost lamb, trying to find its mom (he definitely raised his favorite sheep from a baby. that thing was orphaned and it was his child Odyesseus how dare you) Polyphemus having to roll sheep that get stuck on their backs onto their feet again. Polyphemus in a sun hat throwing grains and foods onto the ground from a large basket in his arm. And all the sheep love him. Yes, they know he might eat some of them. But he cares for them. he shears their wool when it gets too long. He keeps them safe from predators and he feeds them regularly. He's like a god to them. Every so often, he takes a few of their friends, maybe their children, to eat. But in return they are safe, they are cared for, and they are loved.

Zeus: The gods will tell him what you did when he grows up and he’ll kill you and everything you love.

Odysseus: Why?

Zeus: Why what?

Odysseus: If I raise him and he’s my second son, I’m his father, yes?

Zeus: I guess.

Odysseus: And this is a baby, so he won’t remember his real father? I mean, look at him. He doesn’t even know what’s going on right now and half the city is on fire and I just burst in here with a sword. Zero reaction.

Zeus: I guess-

Odysseus: So why would he be mad at me for killing a dude who did not raise him and he doesn’t remember? I’d be his dad. Maybe he’d be mad I stole him from his home but he’d have no emotional connection to these people.

Zeus: I don’t know how those work.

Odysseus: You mean children?!

I know this isn't canon but could you imagine if...

Poseidon: Maybe I was a little too hard on that Odysseus fellow. I mean he did spare my son's life and only did what he had to in order to escape.

Poseidon: I think I'll let him get home. Just gonna go pay a visit to my Siren daughters first...

Poseidon: WHAT THE FU-!

quote from the Iliad, Achilles says "Patroclus died, and he was far better than you."
quote from Gilgamesh epic, Gilgamesh says "For six days I would not let him be buried, thinking 'If my grief is violent enough, perhaps he will come back to life again.' For six days and seven nights I mourned him."

there is a poem in there somewhere, I think, that the world knows about you because someone loved you.

"not all men" you're right Ares the greek god of war would never treat a woman like that

It’s the middle of the night. Chiron should probably get some sleep. Looking out of his window he sees two boys, they’re stargazing. Achilles! He thinks. Patroclus!

It’s only then that he realises that Patroclus’ skin is way too white and as glorious as Achilles was, he definitely didn’t light up like a glow stick in the night. It’s not them. It’s just Nico and Will.

It’s been over 2000 years, they’re dead, Chiron, they’re dead.
