spanish expressions of the day:

“[name of a place] está donde Cristo perdió el mechero.” “[name of a place] está donde Cristo dio las tres voces.” “[name of a place] está donde Cristo perdió los clavos.” “[name of a place] está donde Cristo perdió las sandalias.”

Translation and examples:

El Ikea está donde Cristo perdió el mechero - The Ikea is where Christ lost his lighter.

El colegio está donde Cristo dio las tres voces - The school is where Christ screamed thrice (but + literally: where Christ gave the three voices.)

El museo está donde Cristo perdió los clavos - The museum is where Christ lost the nails.

Tu casa está donde Cristo perdió las sandalias - Your house is where Christ lost the sandals.

And all these Christ-y expressions mean ‘in a remote place.’

住む vs.暮らす

Both of these verbs means “to live” but there is a slight nuance in meaning.

住む「すむ」simply means to live somewhere, the act of of you residing in a house, apartment, etc

暮らす「くらす」means to live but focuses on the 生活 (daily life) and interactions with the place you live

例えば:

僕は東京に住んでいる。This sentence simply means that I live in Tokyo, that I existence and take residence in Tokyo.

僕は東京に暮らしている。This sentence means that I not only reside in Tokyo, but my daily life and interactions are in Tokyo. May imply that I also work there, my whole life is in Tokyo, more than just a place of existence.

Both words are interchangeable, so if you use one in place of the other it’s totally fine, they only really matter when you want to imply something more in the meaning. Also, 一人暮らし「ひとりぐらし」 is a noun that means to live alone or have a solitary life. Thought you guys might find that word useful!

Language Pen Pal project

Hi everyone!

My name is Tas, and I’m from Sydney, Australia. Recently, I was thinking to myself “how cool would a Pen Pal Project be, but with language exchange?” So I decided to launch The Bi-lingual Mingle Project! Basically you just put in your target language (or languages) and your language of fluency- to find someone who has allignent language goals. ie. I am currently studying Spanish but fluent in English so my Pen Pal would be studying English and fluent in Spanish! I have attached the link to the project below and would love to create a space where an international audience can interact!! Please fill the doc. for your new Language Pen Pal!
