Japanese Saying Of The Week!

Japanese saying of the week!

泣き面に蜂 (なきつらにはち) When it rains it pours; salt in the wound; adding insult to injury

A saying for when something bad happens and then something ELSE bad happens on top of that.

泣き面(なきつら/nakitsura) crying face

に(ni) at, on, in

蜂(はち/hachi) bee, wasp

So literally bees at a crying face

that is BRUTAL

Like, you’re ALREADY crying

AND THEN BEES

A MIND MAP ABOUT MIND-MAPPING
A MIND MAP ABOUT MIND-MAPPING
A MIND MAP ABOUT MIND-MAPPING

A MIND MAP ABOUT MIND-MAPPING

If you know me, you’d know that I am a highly visual person. I love learning from images and layouts, and my spatial intelligence is probably my strongest type of intelligence. Because of this, I often use mind maps to study, and so do a lot of other people. However, there are people who don’t really know how to make and utilize a mind map effectively. That’s what this post is for! Here’s how you can make your mind maps more effective and thus enable you to retain more information. (P.S. you might wanna zoom in)

By no means am I an expert in mind-mapping; these are just some habits I have when making a mind map that successfully does its job of helping me remember the topics I’m studying.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop an ask!

Be sad but get up. You don’t have to shower. You can put on the same clothes you wore yesterday. Nobody will care. The sky is blue, wildflowers are blooming by the side of the road. Strangers have stories to tell. Go for a walk, go for a drive, go to a greenhouse, a bookstore, a movie theater. You can stay in bed but nothing is going to happen there. Sometimes you’ve really just got to get the fuck up.

住む vs.暮らす

Both of these verbs means “to live” but there is a slight nuance in meaning.

住む「すむ」simply means to live somewhere, the act of of you residing in a house, apartment, etc

暮らす「くらす」means to live but focuses on the 生活 (daily life) and interactions with the place you live

例えば:

僕は東京に住んでいる。This sentence simply means that I live in Tokyo, that I existence and take residence in Tokyo.

僕は東京に暮らしている。This sentence means that I not only reside in Tokyo, but my daily life and interactions are in Tokyo. May imply that I also work there, my whole life is in Tokyo, more than just a place of existence.

Both words are interchangeable, so if you use one in place of the other it’s totally fine, they only really matter when you want to imply something more in the meaning. Also, 一人暮らし「ひとりぐらし」 is a noun that means to live alone or have a solitary life. Thought you guys might find that word useful!

This is maybe the most frustrating aspect of studying kanji. You start learning 山 as やま. Cool, one kanji memorized. Wait… it can also be read as さん.

Wait. All your other kanji have 2 or 4 extra readings too! Some are on'yomi. Some are kun'yomi.

Why does this have to be so complicated?!

It may seem confusing at first, but if you learn the difference between on'yomi/kun'yomi readings, where they came from, and how they work, we promise it will make learning kanji a lot easier.

Listen to this kanji-tastic episode where Kristen explains all this and more. When you’re breezing through kanji like a pro, you’ll be glad you did.

Language Pen Pal project

Hi everyone!

My name is Tas, and I’m from Sydney, Australia. Recently, I was thinking to myself “how cool would a Pen Pal Project be, but with language exchange?” So I decided to launch The Bi-lingual Mingle Project! Basically you just put in your target language (or languages) and your language of fluency- to find someone who has allignent language goals. ie. I am currently studying Spanish but fluent in English so my Pen Pal would be studying English and fluent in Spanish! I have attached the link to the project below and would love to create a space where an international audience can interact!! Please fill the doc. for your new Language Pen Pal!

Japanese Counters

Counting in Japanese may seem difficult when you first try to tackle it. That’s because of all of the different counters used. Instead of thinking of them as a new speaking rule, try to think of them in the same way as they are used in English. For example; 12 PIECES of paper 6 SLICES of pizza 4 BOWLS of soup and so on Here are the counters you’ll need to know

 人(にん/ nin) > People

一人 (ほとり/ hitori) > one person

二人 (ふたり/ futari) > two people

三人 (さんにん/ sannin) > three people

四人 (よんにん/ yonnin) > four people

五人 (ごにん/ gonin) > five people

冊 (さつ/ satsu) > Bound Objects

一冊 (いっさつ/ issatsu) > one bound object

二冊(にさつ/ nisatsu) > two bound objects

三冊(さんさつ/ sansatsu) > three bound obj.

四冊(よんさつ/ yonsatsu) > four bound obj.

五冊(ごさつ/gosatsu) > five bound obj.

台 (だい/ dai) > Mechanical Items

一台(いちだい/ ichidai) >one mechanical obj.

二台(にだい/nidai)> two mechanical obj.

三台(さんだい/sandai)> three mechanical obj

四台(よんだい/yondai)> four mechanical obj.

五台(ごだい/godai)> five mechanical obj.

杯 (はい/ hai) > Liquid in glasses, cups, or bowls

一杯(いっぱい/ippai)> one cup/glass/bowl of

二杯(にはい/nihai) > two cups/glasses/bowls

三杯(さんはい/sanhai)> 3 cups/glasses/bowls

枚 (まい/ mai) > Thin Flat Objects -

一枚(いちまい/ichimai)> one piece of paper

二枚(にまい/nimai)> two pieces paper

三枚(さんまい/sanmai)>three pieces of paper

四枚(よんまい/yonmai)>four pieces of paper

五枚(ごまい/gomai)>five pieces of paper

本 (ほん/ hon) > Long Cylindrical Items

**pencil was used here just as an example of a long cylindrical object.

~In most situations the Chinese origin numbers are used for the counters listed above, but note the words for 1 person and 2 people employ the native Japanese numbers.

Here are the native Japanese Numbers:

 一つ > ひとつ > hitotsu > one

二つ > ふたつ > futastu > two

三つ > みっつ > mittsu > three

四つ > よっつ > yottsu > four

五つ > いつつ > itsutsu > five

六つ > むっつ > muttsu > six

七つ > ななつ > nanatsu > seven

八つ > やっつ > yattsu > eight

九つ > ここのつ > kokonotsu > nine

十 > とお > too > ten

**Native numbers are used for things like round objects, furniture, mountains, starts, and other very abstract ideas I also made a song for memorizing the native numbers a while ago, if you’re interested : http://youtu.be/MOupUC5WGVI For example:

1.) 問題が二つあります。>mondai ga futatsu arimasu> there are two problems.

2.) ソファーを一つ買います。>Sofaa wo hitotsu kaimasu > I will buy one sofa 3.) 紙が二十三枚あります。>kami ga nijuusan-mai arimasu > There are 23 pieces of paper

4.)犬が一匹います。> inu ga ippiki imasu > There is one dog.
