Ever since the day Billy had asked you to be his, he had thought the constant bugging of men around you would come to an end. But it seemed to be that the Bonney man only noticed those menâs stares towards you even more.
He sat at the bar you currently worked as he watched yet another man eye you from the corner of the room. It made his blood boil, his knuckles turning white from the harsh grip on his shot glass.
âBaby, leave the glass alone.â You teased with that charming smile that made him weak in the knees. âIt ainât done nunâ to ya,â
He put it down, your soft southern accent making his anger simmer down in a instant. âSorry, honey.â
âWhatâs got you starinâ daggers over there?â You re-poured his now empty glass with whiskey.
âThem men starinâ at you.â His eyes darkened as he looked at you through his brows, his fingertips circling the rim of the shot glass.
Your tongue darted out across your bottom lip at his admission, his words making a deep want towards your outlaw settle in your gut knowing how protective he was of you.
âThey can look all they want, darlinâ.â You tried to ease his anger with a gentle voice. âYouâre the only one that Iâd ever let touch meâyou know that.â
âItâs not you I donât trust.â He murmurs as he leans back, his eyes boring into yours.
âHey, foxy..â One of the men he was talking about now stood in front of you, slurring his words. âYouâre mighty fine, mind if we.. talk somewhere privately?â He winked, making you want to throw up. âIâd love to see how you look under them fine clothes of yours,â
You looked him up and down in disgust. âIâm alright, sir. Got someone else in mind for tonight,â You looked at Billy from the corner of your eye, your cowboy smirking up at you. You sighed as you went to grab the drunken manâs glass to refillâhe was still a customer after all.
His grueling grip caught your wrist before you could even grab the glassâalmost pulling you over the bar.
âYou little bitch, canât take a real man, huh?â He spat as you let out a yelp, trying to get out of his grasp.
âBack the fuck off.â Billyâs menacing figure appeared from beside the man, throwing the man back by his shoulder, causing him to fall on his ass.
He groaned, but was back on his feet within seconds. âThe fuck it mean to you, huh? I wanâ her, so sheâs mine.â
The second the man finished his sentence, Billyâs fast fist made contact with his jaw hard, the man being back to his spot on the floor. âDonât you ever fuckinâ say those words about her.â He hissed, leaning down to place more punches to the manâs bloodied face. You watched in a mixture of horror and admirationâmostly admiration.
The man below him only let out a cackle in return. âOh, I see. Sheâs your whore,â He spat blood into Billyâs face, and you swore the whole room stopped at his words.
Billyâs cocked back arm stopped at his words, and within seconds his pistol was pointed at the manâs forehead. âWhat did you just say?â He yelled. âIâll fuckinâ kill youââ
You grabbed his forearm, pulling him back up. âBilly, pleaseââ He turned to you, panting as you tried to calm that wild look in his eye. âThat piece of shit ainât worth it, câmon, baby.â Your eyes flickered between his, and after a moment, he sighed before relenting and putting the gun away.
âYeah, gotta get your bitch to sort out your favorsââ The man continued to talk shit, but Billy cut him off with a swift kick to the ribs.
âShut the fuck up.â Billy rasped out, looking down upon the man.
âCâmon,â You pulled his hand, taking him to the room in the back. You were glad it was around last callâthe bar being mainly empty. You sat him down on some old crates before you turned to grab the spare med-kit you had hidden back there months prior.
Once you had everything ready, you held your hand out, signaling Billy to hand you his cut and bruised knuckles. He did, knowing better than to argue with you on the matter.
Your heart sank in your chest when you first saw them. âBilly, youâve gotta stop gettinâ into fights over me.â You whispered, your eyes not leaving his hand.
His other hand reached out to angle your jaw so your eyes would met his. âDarlinâ, Iâm never gonâ stop fightinâ for you. You know that.â He shook his head with a smile. âHe ainât even get a lick inâIâm fine.â
âI know you can handle yourself.â You mutter in reply. âI just donât like seeinâ you hurt. Regardless of how badâI donât like it. Nor do I like watchinâ you put yourself in danger for me.â You retort with a pointed look.
His gaze lowered. âNow, lady, letâs not pretend you havenât done the same. Iâve witnessed some pretty crazy cat fights after hours at the boardinâ house,â He teased, his hand now cupping your jaw.
You sighed, trying to fight back the smile that threatened to break free. âJusâ please, be careful.â
âAlways am.â He leaned forward to kiss the frown off your face, his hands sliding down your body in order to squeeze your hips.
Your arms wrapped around his neck, drawing him closer to your body as you smiled against his lips.
He pulled back, leaning his forehead onto yours. You both sat there for a couple of moments, enjoying the comfortable silence.
You placed one last kiss to his plump lips. âAlright, let me see that hand of yours.â You asked, and when he placed it into yours, you got to work. You disinfected and bandaged it to ensure it wouldnât get an infection. âThat should do it,â You whispered as you finished tying the cloth, leaning down to press a kiss to his knuckles. âThank you for defendinâ me, honey.â
You swore that even in the darkness of the room you were currently in that you could see his cheeks turn a light shade of pink. âIâm always gonâ defend you, baby.â He whispered, pulling you up by your hand to place you in his lap, his arms slithering around you as he placed a kiss to your cheek. He went quiet for a moment before he turned to grab something. You looked at him questionably when you saw that glint in his eye.
He smirked as he placed his signature hat onto your head. âThere.â He admired his work as he fixed your hair, styling it to compliment the hat. âThat should tell all those fuckers that youâre mine.â
Your teeth sunk into his bottom lip at his words as your eyes flickered between his. âI wouldnât have it any other way,â You whispered, the tip of his hat hitting his head as you leaned in to reconnect your lips again.
He didnât mindâhe thought it looked better on you anyways.

When you woke up, that unusual ringing in your ears, that pounding in your head, and the scratchiness of your throatâyou knew you had fallen ill. One of the boys in the gang, or hell, maybe even someone you had came across had given you somethingâyou didnât really want to know.
You groaned, rubbing your eyes as you pulled the covers closer to you, attempting to sleep away the sickness. You didnât want to get up to go to the doctors nor did you have enough money to even pay one. So you did what you do bestâignoring the problem completely.
You fell back asleep easily, sleeping the day and night away completely. When your eyes first fluttered open due to the sunlight intruding on your slumber, you thought you were free from the confines of your illness, but you were mistaken.
The second you sat up, all symptoms that were now arguably worse returned within an instant, causing you to get dizzy. You crashed back down instantly, a whine leaving your lips. Your muscles ached from staying in bed all day, and you wanted a damn drinkâa real one. And you wanted to see your cowboy.. so bad. But with the pounding in your head feeling just as powerful as your heartbeat, the thought of even moving made you want to throw up.
And it didâyou wanted to cry as you were forced to rush to the trash can in the corner. After 5 minutes of throwing up, your stomach finally relented. You carried yourself back over to your bed, the exhaustion taking over once again.
Hours later, a soft yet powerful knock on your door woke you up with a jump. Your eyebrows knitted as you heard the knocks only get louder. Now alert and awake, you slowly reached for your gun-belt that was neatly rested on your bedside table, grabbing your loaded pistol and cocking it. You used the pistol to slightly lift up the curtain to your windowâit was raining, and it was night.
No one good could be paying you a visit at this hour.
You crept over to the door, the knocks only increasing in volume. You slowly turned the handle, your gun tightly in your gripâfinger ghosting over the trigger. Adrenaline and anxiety coursed through your veins, you didnât even feel sick anymore.
The door creaked open, and you pointed the pistol at whoever was out there before you revealed your form.
âJesus, lady.â Billyâs soft laugh hit your ears, making you lower the gun instantly, placing it on the table by the door. âStayinâ ready, huh?â
A heavy sigh of relief left your lips as you silently walked into his arms, your head resting on his shoulder as your headache began to form again. His arms wrapped around you quickly, the tip of his hat hitting your head when he leaned down to leave a kiss on your hair.
âYou alright, honey?â He whispered, still holding you. âBeen wonderinâ where you were. Supposed to meet me at the stables earlier.â
You sighed, completely forgetting your plans with the man. âIâm sorry, Billy,â Your hoarse voice whispered. âIâm sick, I been asleep all day.â
His eyebrows knitted together in concern immediately, as he pushed you off his shoulder to cradle your face in his hands gently. âHow bad is it?â
âJust feel like shit,â You chuckled, sending a smile to his face. âIâm okay, Billy.â
His eyes clouded with worry. âCâmon, letâs get you inâ away from this storm before it gets you sicker.â He ushered you in. âYou seen a doctor yet?â He asked.
âNah, I didnât think it would get worse, plus itâs not like I got the money to pay one. Tried to sleep it off, I felt too bad yesterday to get out of bed at all.â You responded as you went to lay down. He tucked your gun back into its holster, before he went to refill your water.
He came back a moment later, a glass of water and a wet rag in hand.
âThank you,â You whispered as you took a sip, as he placed the wet rag on the back of your neck.
He hummed back to you, laying down next you once you put the water aside, bringing you into his arms.
âYou gotta tell me when youâre sick, darlinâ.â He whispered to you in the moon lit room. âCanât lose you to somethinâ like that. Happened to me too many times.â
âIâm sorry, Billy.. Iâ I donât mean to worry you.â You said, looking up at him.
âYou donât gotta apologize, baby, just tell me next time so I can come take care of you, yâknow?â He smiled, a lovey smile on his lips as he bent down to leave a kiss on your nose. âWhat can of man would I be if I left my woman to lay sick alone?â He pinched your side slightly, a giggle escaping your lips.
âI reckon youâd be a regular oleâ cowboy.â You joked.
âWell, luckily for you, I happen to be an outlaw.â He chuckled as he leaned down to kiss youâbut your finger pressed into his lips stopped him. He looked at you, offended.
âI donât want to get you sick,â You told him, your smile now more teasing.
âI donât give a damn about some cold, baby.â He pushed your hand out the way, pressing his lips against yours in an instant, the man kissing you passionatelyâas if you possessed the air he so very needed. He pulled back, his teeth nibbling on your bottom lip. âHavenât seen you in days, missed the feelinâ of your lips.â He muttered against your lips before connecting them again, his words sending shivers down your spine, your arms wrapping around his neck.
You felt comfort in the fact that youâd always have your outlaw to be there to make you feel better, no matter what.

You and the boys damn near fell through the doors of some random boarding house you came acrossâ the lot of you attempting to run away from a rival gang that caught you stealing cattle.
Jesse threw 10 dollars down on the counter, more than enough to get rooms for you all. You had been running around all dayâ but the smell of gunpowder and crimson blood still clogged your nose hairs and adrenaline still pumped through your veins. You simply wanted a bath and to go the hell to bed.
But, who would you be to turn down Jesseâs smiling face, holding out a shot of whiskey for you.
You sighed, your hat tipping down with your head as you shook it, your hands rested neatly on your gun-belt, cowboy boot tapping softly on the floor as you pretended to weigh your options.
âOh, câmon, Y/N.â He held it out for you. âDrink with us!â
You chuckled. âWhy not,â You went to sit down at the bar next to them.
âHell yeah!â Jesse and the rest of the boys who were scattered around the bar cheeredâ you normally werenât one for their after hour shenanigans.
âOnly for a little bit, though. Iâm tired as hell.â You said, downing the whiskey shot.
âSure,â Jesse waved you off with a knowing look, ordering a couple more rounds for you all. You laughed, going along with his antics as always. You had known Jesse since you were youngâ he was the one who had vouched for you in this group, who had helped you gain the respect that you had today.
You let out a hiss at the burning feeling of that whiskey going down your throat, slamming the shot glass back onto the table.
âIâll have what theyâre havinâ.â You heard that familiar husky voice from next to you. Billy Bonney stood with a small smirk toying on his lips as he sat down on the stool next to you. He nodded at the bartender when he slid him said shot, the outlaw throwing it back without hesitation.
âWhere you been, cowboy?â You asked, slightly tipsy.
âBeen at the Saloon playinâ Poker.â He responded.
âYou win?â
His smirk only grew. âSure did. It was a big pot too,â
âGood for you, Billy.â You smiled, turning back to grab you and him another shot. âTo your winnings.â You cheered, the pair of you clinking your glasses together before downing them.
âAye, yâall get that cattle?â He asked, leaning closer to you with a quieter voice. âYâall stink of gunpowder.â
âNah,â You shook your head. âTheir boys came outâ the shots scared the cattle away, and we ainât have enough ammo to fight âem off so we had to cut and run. Shot a couple of them, though.â
He hummed. âWeâll get âem next time, Y/N, donât worry.â
âI hope so. Jesse here is runninâ up his tab right now and we barely got enough cash to buy food.â You shook your head with a bitter smile. âAye, at least we got liquor.â
âWeâll figure it outâ we always do.â Billy reminded with a comforting smile.
âYeah.â You sighed, trying to push the worries away. You downed one last shot before pushing yourself off the bar stool. âAlright, boys, that bath is callinâ my name. See yâall tomorrow.â You turned, heading to the stairs as you heard a string of good nights.
After washing up, you put on a comfortable nightgown, heading to the room that matched the key Jesse had given you.
You carelessly threw the door open, the towel in your hands still wringing out your wet hair. But said towel almost fell from your grip once you saw a shirtless Billy standing in the middle of your room.
âOh, shit, Iâm sorry,â You apologized as soon as his confused gaze landed on yours, backing out of the room. âThought this was my room,â
He sighed, throwing on the shirt he was changing into before you walked in. âYouâre good. Jesse told me downstairs that he ainât have enough cash to get me a roomâ Hope you donât mind, but Iâd rather bunk with you than the one of the boys.â
âOh, yeah, no, you can sleep in here. I donât mind,â You nodded, walking in and shutting the door, placing your gun-belt down on the nightstand. Your eyes drifted to the small twin bed before you, your gaze going back up to Billyâs nervously.
âI can sleep on the floor, itâs alright.â He immediately tried to come up with a solution, already knowing what you were thinking of.
âBilly, Iâm sure your back hurts just as bad as mineâ if not more.â You waved him off. âI donât want you to wake up even more sore tomorrow. Itâs fine.. I ainât scared of sleepinâ in the same bed as you. Unless youâre scared of sharinâ with me,â You lightly teased, laying down onto the bed, opening the covers for him.
A soft smile crept onto his lips. âNow, why would I be afraid of such a pretty lilâ thing like you?â He poked back, his words sending a blush to your cheeks as he got into bed, taking you up on your offer. The bed was quite small, and to ensure Billy wouldnât fall off you were kinda hanging off the side.
A giggle left your lips. âThereâs no way Iâm not gonâ roll off this bed in my sleep and face plant onto the floor.â
He laid on his back, one arm thrown behind his head so he could look down at you. His gaze lingered onto yours for a momentâ and you could see the gears turning in his brain. âHere,â He flipped onto his side, his hands slowly tugging you into him so your back was to his chest, his arm loosely hung around your waist. âI wonât let you fall,â He whispered into your ear, sending shivers down your spine.
âThank you,â You leaned up to blow out the candle lit next to you before snuggling back into his arms, smiling. âGânight, Billy.â
His arms tightened around you, and you could hear a faint chuckle from behind you, the man placing a soft kiss to your head. âGânight, darlinâ.â

poor thing would be so worn out, rubbing his tired eyes, ignoring the chatter going on beside him from jesse and the other boys. itâs been a long, hard day. his limbs ache, his shoulders and back tense. his hands have blisters from pulling at reigns all day and he can feel the heat on the high points of his cheekbones that radiate from a sunburn. all billy really wants to do is head back to their little hidey-house and collapse onto his bed, but the boys insisted on a drink.
billy would be blinking owlishly, chin resting on his hand as he tries to stay awake, but then someone is picking up a fiddle. a guitar joins in and then his eyes are wide open, perking up at the sweetest voice heâs ever heard. his back straightens up as he looks to the corner of the little bar, eyes landing on you as you twirl about the little makeshift stage. your dress swishes in the light of the oil lamps, your smile charming and fun.
he thinks he must be dreaming as the song goes on, especially when you meet his gaze and he watches as your brows twitch upwards, just barely. interestedly. he lifts the corner of his lips in a shy sort of smile, his cheeks now warm from more than just the hours he spent in the sun. you watch him watching you, your own smile growing when his does.
when you finish your song, you laugh and take a little bow, shimmying your ruffly skirts at the cheers of everyone in the place. then, you excuse yourself after blowing a kiss to the crowd. his eyes follow you, his heartbeat kicking up in his chest as you make your way towards him. surely this is all in his mind. maybe heâd fallen asleep propped up on his palm, dreaming up a pretty little thing like you.
but no, itâs very real when you come to a stop before him and lean on his table. jesse and the boys go quiet, all watching.
âhi there, cowboy,â you say, giving him a sticky-sweet grin. he flounders for a moment.
âh-hi, miss,â he manages to get out, standing politely and removing his hat. oh yes, he is wide awake.
his boyish stuttering seems to make your own face light up even more, amused.
âyou got a name?â you ask, stepping a little closer to him. your hand reaches out to slide the tips of your fingers down one of his leather suspender straps and he doesnât even try to hide his little shiver.
âiâm billy.â

masterlist
When your eyes first laid upon Lucy Gray Baird, you were immediately enthralled by her presence. Everyone who had ever gotten the honor to meet her would say the same.
You had grown up in the very same district that her and her family, The Covey, were locked up in after being rounded up by the Peacekeepers. Most people around Twelve talked shit on them for being different, but the thing that drew you in the most to her was the fact that she didnât give a shit.
She didnât care what anyone thought, no one in her family did. They loved what they did, and that was singing. You saw this on full display at the Hob, where they performed every other night.
You already knew she was beautiful, but, God, when you saw her on that stage, beaming, you swore Aphrodite was standing before you. Her voice was just as beautiful as her, as she danced around stage, captivating the whole room.
At the end her performance, you snatched a daisy out of someoneâs bouquet as you walked by, speed-walking to the corridor you were watching her walk into.
âLucy Gray!â You called, the girl turning towards your call immediately, a smile still on her face. You held out the flower, a soft smile on your face. âYouâre beautiful, as well as your singing.â
She blushed, her laugh coming out. âWhy, thank you, darlinâ.â She took the daisy, taking it up to her nose to smell. âWhatâs your name?â
âY/N,â You beamed. âItâs a real pleasure to see you and your family around here. You really light it up âround here.â You complimented. âTwelveâs a normally dull place, but here.. itâs different.â
âThank you, truly.â Her hand grabbed yours, squeezing. âIâll see you around.â
And she kept her word, finding you after her next show to get to know you better.
And just like that, the pair of you were inseparable.
She introduced you to the Covey, and after they learned you had pipes, you were immediately brought into their group. You loved it, it felt as if you had found the people youâd been longing for your whole life.
But you found yourself staring at Lucy Gray for longer than normal, a dopey smile lazily draped across your sun kissed features. It wasnât until some teasing from CeCe and Billy that you realized that you had feelings for the girl.
âAye, Y/N, it seems like you got some drool right thereâŚâ CeCe teased, a playful smile on his face as they caught you staring at the girl for the 100th time.
Billy butted in from his side. âYeah, you do. Someoneâs fallinâ for the songbird,â He laughed. You rolled your eyes at them, before taking their words into consideration.
Holy fuck, you were falling for her.
I mean, how could you not? She was a beacon of light, her presence alone brighting up every room she walked into to, and she had treated you wonderfully, even going as far to include you with her family.
You were caught up in your love daze, not realizing the crushing realities that came with your feelings. But when you did, it left a sour taste in your mouth.
The butterflies swirling in your abdomen stopped in an instant, replaced with an oozing, grueling feeling of worry. Lucy Gray could find you repulsingâ and the whole Covey would leave you as well.
It left you wishing you had a factory reset button to forget your feelings at once.
âY/N, whatâs with the frown?â Lucy Gray suddenly appeared in front of you, her signature smile on her cherry lips.
Your eyes snapped to hers, your nerves only growing. âOh, nothinâ. Just thinkinâ.â
She sat down next to you. âOh, really? Didnât think you was capable.â She joked, making you lightly shove her with a smile.
Your breath caught in your throat when you realized how close you were to the girl. Her honey eyes stared up into yours, and you struggled to not look at her lips. All you wanted to do was close the space between the pair of you.
But you decided on that day that you would settle for this. After allâ having her as a friend was better than nothing.
It wasnât until the reaping of that year that you decided to throw caution to the wind.
It was the Coveyâs first reaping, and it was for the annual 9th Hunger Games. Your nerves always got the best of you during this time of year, but it seemed that you werenât the only one.
You sat in your room, Lucy Gray sitting at your desk in the corner. She said she was trying to write, but you could tell by the bouncing of her leg and her tense body that it wasnât going well.
You licked your lips, putting your book aside. âYou alright, Gray?â
She turned her head, her eyes meeting yours from over her shoulder. She sighed, turning back to the paper and rubbing her temple. âNo,â
You stood up, coming to stand next to her, your hesitant hands rubbing her shoulders, the tense muscles deflating under your touch. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI.. I just really miss my mama.â She let out a sad breath. âAnd this reapinâ stuff is got my nerves wrecked.â
âI know the feelinâ.â You bitterly chuckled. âYou wonât get your name drawn, Lucy, none of you will. Your names are only in their once, your chances are slim. You should be okay. I miss my ma, too. I know it hurts.â You tried your best to calm her.
Her hand came up to grab yours that was resting on her shoulder, lacing your fingers together. âYou know, you are about the only good thing in this District,â She smiled up at you, her worry lines faded.
At her words you felt those butterflies return, as your eyes flickered down to her lips, your teeth pulling in your bottom lip as you tried to talk yourself down.
Lucy Gray noticed this, however, and with a smile still plastered on her pretty face, she leaned up ever so slightly and captured your lips with her own. Your eyes widened in surprise, before they fluttered closed, your hands coming up to cup her face.
You let out a happy hum against her lips, the girl standing up to get a better grip on your hips, her lips never leaving yours. When you broke apart for air, a giggle left her slips at the sight of your lips stained with her lipstick.
âIâve wanted you to do that for so long,â You admitted with a smile.
A smirk grew across her face. âI was waitinâ for you to grow the balls to do it first. Turns out you were too chicken.â She teased, her arms wrapping around your neck as she left small pecks on your lips.
You didnât even pretend to be offended by her words, instead rolling your eyes playfully before kissing her again.
âBe my girlfriend,â She whispered against your lips. You pulled back slightly at her words, before jumping into her arms.
âYes, yes.â You chuckled, as the girl hugged you back just as tightly.
That led you to now, where you smiled at the same brunette that was laid in your arms. She was different, anyone who had been what she went through would be, but she was also still your same Lucy Gray in all the best ways.
After you got her back from the games, you vowed to never let her go again. The turmoil you felt in the weeks that she was away from you, not knowing if youâd see her again or notâ you never wanted to feel that again. And she felt the same way.
âYou got a starinâ problem, girl?â Lucy Gray teased with that southern drawl you loved, seeing that you were lost in thought.
A warm smiled crossed your face at the sound of her voice, your hand going to play with her hair. âIf it means I get to look at you, then yes, I do.â
She giggled, snuggling deeper into your arms. âYeah, yeah, you sap.â
âYou love it,â
She rolled her eyes, playfully. âI do,â She looked at you seriously now, leaning up to kiss you softly. You smiled against her lips, the feeling of her expressing her love for you in such an intimate way always making you smile.
You would proudly admit that you were head over heels in love with your girlfriend to anyone. But you knew you couldnâtâ hell, the only people that even knew you were together was the Covey and her mentor, Coriolanus Snow. People didnât seem expect, nor accept your type of love.
She had told him during her time there, during the nights they spent together talking through the cage bars. She talked his ear off about you, a love-sick smile on her face the whole time, the girl forgetting that some people werenât accepting of your love.
But to her surprise, Coriolanus didnât care if she was with a girl. In fact, he was thrilled, which confused her to no end. (She didnât know this, but the only reason he was happy was because he now had something that would fuel her to win.)
You thanked every star above for the Snow boy for bringing your girl back to you, even if she was brought back with sharper edges. You didnât care, you had her back in your arms. And you wanted to thank him.
But, Lucy Gray was a different girl than what she was when she left, even if she tried to pretend that wasnât the case. She was more paranoid, more protective of the people she lovedâ especially you. More than you anticipated.
So the next morning when you set out to find the boy who was currently serving time as a Peacekeeper in your very district, the one goal in your mind was to thank him, the thought that this might be upsetting to your girlfriend not even crossing your temple.
You decided to bring him a roseâ Lucy Gray mentioning to you that his Grandmother grew them, and you just happened to as well. It wasnât like the pure ones his Grandmother grew in the Capitol, but you deemed it good enough.
You caught a glimpse of his platinum buzzcut, a smile growing over your ruby red lips. âSnow!â You called, jogging up to him in your cowboy boots. He turned at the call, his eyebrows furrowing when he saw it was you.
âY/N?â He questioned.
âHey, Coriolanus.â You smiled, holding out the rose for him. âLucy Gray mentioned something about your Grandmother and roses, and just as a thanks for you bringinâ her back to me, Iâd like to give you this,â You motioned to the rose.
To your delight, his hard face warped into that of a smile. âThank you, Y/N. Truly.â His hand came out to squeeze your forearm affectionately. âI appreciate it, and you donât have to thank me for that.â
âI do.â You assured him. âI donât know what I wouldâve done if I didnât get her back. You saved her⌠so, truly, thank you, Coriolanus. I mean it.â You felt eyes on you, but you shook the feeling off.
He nodded sheepishly, not used to the type of compliment you were giving him. âOf course.. Thank you for the rose. Let me know if you need anything, Iâll see you around.â He smiled, giving your forearm one last squeeze before he turned.
âYouâre welcome, Coryo.â You flashed him one last smile before you turned on your heel yourself. What you didnât expect to see was to see those honey eyes you loved staring daggers at you.
You cocked your head to the side as she began to stomp her way towards you. Once she reached you, she grabbed your wrist with a hard grip, and without word dragged you back to your now shared home.
âLucy, whatâre you doing?â You asked, just as your neared the front lawn of your home.
She clicked her tongue, a sign she was mad, and shook her head, continuing to lead you to the house in silence. Once the pair of you got in, she threw her bag on your shared bed, crossing her arms.
âWhat the hell was that?â She asked, her tone hard.
âWhat are you talkinâ about, Lucy?â You asked, stepping closer to her. She only backed away, her head shaking once again, while you visibly shrank at her rejection.
âDonât play dumb, Y/N. You know better,â She scoffed, rolling her eyes. âI been runninâ around, lookinâ for you like some fool, while you were off with my mentor, lettinâ him touch you. Why were you with him, huh?â She pressed. âWhat, you think Iâm stupid or somethinâ?â
âCoriolanus?â Your eyebrows furrowed, still not quite catching on to what she was so angry about.
âYes, damnit, him.â Her voice slightly raised as she walked up to you, her gaze lowered as she glared at you. âWhy were you givinâ him a rose, huh? Why were his hands on you?â
You licked your lips as you took in her state. Her pupils were blown out, her jaw slackâ God, she looked so hot when she was angry. You shook your head at your thoughts, trying to be serious.
âAye!â Her fingers snapped in front of your face, angrily. âAnswer me,â
âLucy, Iâ I was goinâ to thank him..â You whispered, your voice dying in your throat as you submitted to her fiery gaze.
âWhy?â Her voice was low and raspy, sending shivers down your spine.
âFor bringinâ you back tâme.â You admitted, looking at the floor guiltily as it sunk in that how much you truly had upset her. âI never got the chance to properly thank him, and you said he liked roses. So I brought him one, I thought it would remind him of home. I didnât mean anything by it, I swear,â
Her eyes softened. âOh, baby, Iâm sorry..â She whispered, one hand coming up to cup your jaw, rubbing softly. âI.. My mind went somewhere completely different when I saw him touchinâ you.. It just made me angry,â
A sly smirk came over your features. âI think you mean jealous, Lucy Gray.â You whispered teasingly.
âOnly you could make me this crazy,â She smiled. âBut, I am sorry.â She said, guilt swirling in her eyes.
âHey, itâs alright.â You reassured her, seeing that she was beating herself up. âEven I get a little jealous seeinâ Billy drape hisself on you when heâs shitfaced, itâs normal, baby, I ainât mad.â Your goofy smile mixed with your southern accent making her smile come back.
But just as it returned, it was replaced with a serious look. âJust.. stay away from him, alright? I donât fully trust âem.â
âI wonât go near him again, I promise. I just wanted him to know I was thankful for bringinâ my best girl back tâme,â You tried to cheer her up, your lips ghosting over hers.
âGood. âCause your mine,â She smirked, closing the space between the two of you as her lips kissed you hard, her teeth nipping your bottom lip as you let out a gasp, granting her access to your mouth as she deepened the kiss.
You smiled against her lips, thanking the stars above that you had the pleasure of being hers.

Coriolanus sat with an emotionless look on his face as he sat on the rocky train that was taking him to his worst nightmare. He was being shipped off to District 12 for cheating to help you win the games. He didnât regret that, he never would.
But this was not the ideal outcome heâd imagined.
At least he wouldnât be completely aloneâ after all, he was going to your district. He just wished it was under different circumstances.
âYou know, I thought I might find you here,â Sejanusâ words caused him to turn around immediately, breaking him from his thoughts. âSitting all by yourself.â He teased, walking into the train cart Coriolanus was currently in.
âSejanus, whatâre you doingââ He stood up, his eyebrows knitted together in concern and annoyance.
âWhat do you think?â He cut him off with a scoff. âAfter what I did in the arena? My father had to buy me the Academy a brand new gym just so I could get my diploma.â He put his bag down. âHe begged me to stay, but once I found out where they were sending you, I couldnât get out fast enough.â He admitted with a sigh, moving to sit down. âBarely made the train âcause of this stupid knee, but itâs okay, they gave me some morphling for the pain.â
Coriolanus looked at him with judgment. âYou volunteered for this?â
âI figured if I get through basic and then maybe Iâd become a medic.â He beamed. âMaybe make a real difference out here⌠just like you said.â Sejanusâ gaze turned downward. âThey never told us what you did,â
âI cheated.â He answered, shamelessly. âTo save Y/N from the snakes.â Sejanusâ nodded slowly, understanding where his friend was coming from. After a beat of silence, Coriolanusâ tearful eyes met his. âDo you think they killed her?â
âWhy would they risk it?â Sejanus questioned with furrowed brows. âShe was a big hit, if there is a games next year, theyâre probably gonna invite her to sing at the opening ceremony.â He joked with a smile.
Coriolanus didnât laugh. âYou know, when you came in, I was weighing the merits of suicide.â He half-joked, his smile not meeting his eyes.
âWhen weâre about to be free?â Sejanus shot back. âWhen the girl you risked everything for might be waiting for you at the end of this track?â At his words, Coriolanusâ throat ran dry, the tears returning to his eyes. The possibility that you might be waiting not even crossing his mind. Sejanus looked at him with a knowing glint in his eye. âMy friend, donât give them the satisfaction. Your life has just begun. Youâre gonna do greatâ Weâre both gonna do great.â
Sejanusâ words still rung in his ears, even if they were spoken all those months ago.
Even now, when you were delicately tucked under his arm, your head buried in his neck as you slept soundly. That conversation seemed to take home in his mind, never leaving.
You were, in-fact, waiting for him, and the moment you saw him you ran into his arms, and he cherished you every day from that moment. The pair of you spent as much time together as you could, and you loved every second of it. As did he.
You were like a star of brightness in his darknessâ lighting up places he didnât even know existed and granting them with your warmth. And now that you werenât fighting for your life, he got to learn so much about you.
He learned about your quirks, your personality, your smile, all of it. You learned the same about him.
But nights like these where he couldnât find sleep and was left up alone, the silence and ringing of the bugs outside consumed him, the man getting caught up in the ropes that was his thoughts.
He often didnât believe he deserved you, that you were too pure for him. You were gifted to him by mistake, but he was too selfish to let you go.
And, God, you never wanted him too.
Coriolanus had a bad habit of not speaking his mind, and bottling his emotions until they bubbled over, everything coming out in one out burst of rage and sadness. You didnât blame him, you never did. Instead, you picked him up from the floor and held him until he calmed down.
He had never experienced the type of love you gave him, and it scared the shit out of him. He didnât know how to return it, he wasnât good with kind of stuff. You taught him things everyday, though.
You snuggled deeper into his neck, his uneven breathing causing you, a light sleeper, to wake up. Or, according to your theories, you were so interlinked with Coryo that you could sense when he was overthinking.
You left a small patch of kisses on his throat, cracking your sleepy eyes open to confirm your suspicionsâ the boy was staring off into space, not a drop of sleep in his eyes.
âCoryo,â You whispered, leaning up to kiss his jaw softly. He turned at your acts, his eyes meeting yours as his previous frown was replaced with that lovey smile you adored. âCanât sleep?â
He shook his head, temporarily pushing you off of him in order for him to turn on his side to properly look at you. Once he got situated, he pulled you back into his chest, a giggle leaving your lips.
Your fingers came up to knead through his messy platinum locks. âWhatâs on your mind, baby?â
His eyes fluttered closed for a moment. âNothing.. itâs just, sometimes I think you may be too good for me.â He admitted slowly.
Your eyebrows shot up. âCoryo, if anything, youâre too good for me. Remember, honey, Iâm âDistrict Trashâ.â You laughed, repeating the words Lucky Flickermen had said about you before wrapping your arms around his neck and leaving kisses all over his face. âYou must be a fool if you canât see how in love I am with you. You are more than good to me, I couldnât imagine my life with anyone else.â You promised, continuing to leave kisses on your loverâs smiling face with every word you spoke.
His arms wrapped around your waist, hugging you closer to him. âI love you,â He whispered in your ear, beginning to leave his own kisses on your neck and jaw.
Butterflies creeped up your spine at his confession, a love-sick smile tugging on your lips as you leaned up to really kiss him.
His hands came up to cup your face as he slipped his tongue into your mouth, the kiss only being further fueled with your burning passion for each other. Your hands slipped back into his locks for purchase as the kiss grew more needy. You let out a whimper against his mouth when he began to kiss you harder, angling your body back to deepen it further.
He smirked against your lips at your noises, before pulling back for air. His thumb swiped back and forth across your cheekbone as you both stared at each other, love strong in the both of your eyes.
âI love you, Coryo.â You whispered back, before taking your spot back in his arms. âGet some sleep, my love.â You left another kiss on his throat, the boy hugging you somehow closer, leaving a kiss on your forehead.
âThank you,â He softly spoke, leaning up to blow out the candle you had lit earlier.
âAlways,â

Since your last real conversation with Coriolanus, he had been acting different. He was colder, and you didnât know if you were simply going crazy, or if he just going out of his way to ignore you.
But regardless, you were hurt. When you tried to speak to him, he would say he had somewhere to be. And maybe he did, but you just wished heâd spend time with you.
You missed him, really.
Lucy Gray frowned as she watched you from across the room. You and the Covey were all getting ready backstage at the Hob where you were set to perform shortly. Even if you were cousins, you and Lucy Gray were brought up as sisters and knew the other probably better than you knew yourselves.
She watched you as you were deep in thought, and she knew something was troubling you. She walked over, and with a click of her tongue she gained your attention.
With a raise of her eyebrows you already knew what she was thinking. âLucy Gray, please. Not right now,â
She raised her hands up in surrender, sitting down next to you on the couch. âI was just gonna ask what was wrong,â
âIâm sorry,â You sighed, rubbing your temple. âIâm stressed out,â
âTalk to me,â She softly smiled, her hand coming up to comfortably rub your shoulder.
âCoriolanus has just been acting weird, and I donât know why. I think.. I think when we were at the lake I said something that he didnât like, or something.â You vented. âJust ever since we got back, heâs been off. Or maybe Iâm just delusional.â You scoffed, rolling your eyes at yourself. âChrist, Gray, Iâm loosinâ it.â
She giggled. âYou got a bad case of the love blues, it sounds to me, Y/N.â She repeated the same thing your mothers used to say all the time when talking about past relationships.
A small smile blessed your features. âI think you may be on to somethinâ.â You sighed, again. âI just wish heâd at least talk to me, yâknow? Let me know whatever Iâve done, so I can fix it, or if he wants to break up just fuckinâ tell me. I hate when shit just lingers.â
âI know.â She shook her head. âListen, if he doesnât realize how damn good heâs got it, then he ainât worth it. You know better. And I know you two got history and what not, but if he stressinâ you out so bad you canât even enjoy a performance, Iâd say ya need to talk to the boy.â She explained, shrugging. âOr leave his ass. You deserve better,â
You chuckled. âOnly you, Lucy Gray, could manage to make me laugh while talking about my relationship problems.â You shook your head, playfully.
A smile came back to her face. âYou know it, now, câmon we got a show to play.â She stood up, holding her hand out for you to take.
She brought you over to the rest of the Covey, Issac immediately bringing you into a side hug.
âAye, sis, you want me to kick that boyâs ass?â He asked, smiling goofy.
You laughed. âNo, please.â
âAlright, alright.â He shook his head. âLetâs go, folks!â
Once you all were out on stage, all of the struggles and worries wrestling around your mind faded, and a smile brightly displayed on your face as you sang along with your family. You didnât even realize how fast it was going by because you were enjoying yourself.
Until you saw his smirk in that crowd.
You were scanning the crowd as normal, loving to see all of different people coming to together to enjoy music when you saw him. He was in the back of the room, alone, his arms crossed over his chest as he smirked at you.
His gaze almost made you feel uneasy, his sharp eyes boring into yours. Lucy Gray wrapped up one of her songs, turning on her heel and winking at you, her signal to let you know it was your turn on the mic.
You sighed before standing up, grabbing your guitar and walking up to the mic.
âHey, twelve,â You smiled, looking at the crowd. âHow yâall doinâ tonight, huh?â They all cheered in return, making your smile grow bigger. âThatâs what I like to hear! Alright, hereâs the song.â
Over and over, I keep goinâ over the world we knew.
You began, singing deeply and sharply into the mic, staring into Coriolanusâ eyes.
Once when you walked beside me,
That inconceivable, that unbelievable world we knew,
When we two were in love.
Your eyes burned into his as the rest of the world seemed to fade away, leaving only you and him as you sang to him. He knew it was about him, most of your songs were.
And every bright neon sign turned into stars,
And the sun and the moon seemed to be ours.
Each road that we took turned into gold,
But the dream was too much for you to hold.
Your voice boomed across the pub, the couples holding each other and the singles downing their shots in misery. You touched all their hearts with the song, somehow. His eyebrows furrowed as he truly listened to the lyrics, seeing how you wrote about your love and pain, and he wondered if it was still about him.
I mean, he hadnât hurt you, right? He didnât think him ignoring you for a week or two would push you this far.
Now, over and over I keep goinâ over the world we knew.
Days when you used to love me.
Issac and Cece took over for the music break, as you turned to blink away the tears that threatened to spill.
And every bright neon sign turned into stars,
And the sun and the moon seemed to be ours.
Each road that we took, it turned into the gold,
But the dream was too much for you to hold.
The tears only got closer to dropping from your eyes as you kept singing, just trying to get through the song. You tried focusing on the beautiful music the Covey produced behind you and put your all into your singing.
Now, over and over I keep goinâ over the world we knew.
Days when you used to love me,
Over and over I keep goinâ over that world we knew.
You finished with one last strum of your guitar, and the melodies of Lucy Gray and Maudie Ivory next to you. The crowd erupted in cheers and claps.
âThank you!â You smiled as the rest of your family joined you, bowing. After saying your goodbyes, you stalked off stage as fast as you could, ignoring the concerned gaze from Coriolanus.
âYour singing was beautiful, I love that song.â Lucy Gray said as she walked beside you. âBut I do want to give that boy a stern talkinâ to for makinâ you feel that way.â
You grabbed her wrist. âNo, Lucy. Let me talk to him.â She looked at you with raised brows, the pair of you exchanging words with your eyes. Eventually she nodded, stepping forward and letting you walk.
You walked through the corridor that led back out to the dance floor, your eyes looking for that familiar face. But it seemed to be that he found you before you could find him, the man already walking towards you.
You crossed your arms, turning on your heel to walk deeper into the corridor so no one would be around. You knew heâd follow, so you leaned against the wall, popping the gum in your mouth.
âThere you are,â He called as he turned the corner, seeing you standing there. He walked over to stand in front of you. âY/N, that songââ
âCut the shit,â You cut him off. âWhatâs been goinâ on with you, Coriolanus?â
His eyebrows furrowed at your forwardness. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean you avoidinâ me. You been actinâ weird since the lake, Coryo.â You sighed, pushing yourself off the wall to get eye to eye with the man before you. âIf this is about what I said about runninâ away..â
He rubbed his temple, staying silent.
âCoriolanus, do you expect me to enjoy life here? Watchinâ people get hung every other day, scared for my own damn life? My families lives?â You threw your arms out, scoffing. âWhy would I want to stay?â
âBecause of me!â He cut off your rant with a whisper yell. âI wanted you to want to stay, with me. Or.. come with me to the Capitol.â
âYou know how I feel about that.â
âI know. And I wish I could change that.â He stepped forward a bit. âBecause I donât want to be away from you, Y/N.â
Your eyes softened. âCoryo, I donât want to be away from you either. Hell, Iâve been thinkinâ about you for weeks just because you didnât talk to me,â You bitterly laughed at your own foolishness. âBut, look, if this is gonâ cause a problem between us, then maybe we should just call it off here, âcause even if itâll hurt like hell, if we donât got trust in each other then we got dirt.â You shrugged, even though the words you spoke felt like a dagger to the heart.
âNo.â He shook his head immediately, his hands reaching out to grip your hips, almost seeming to make sure you wouldnât run. âIâm not letting you go, no. Definitely not over this.â
âThen what do you want from me?â You asked, your eyes flickering between his. âYou iced me out for 2 weeks because of what I said, then when I give you a solution, you say no?â
âBecause that solution is us not being together.â He said, firmly. âThat is the last thing I want. This whole thing started because Iâm afraid of being away from you, Y/N.â He finally admitted.
You sighed. âWhy didnât you tell me that? We couldâve worked this out together.â
His hands slid up your body to cradle your face. âI was afraid. Iâm sorry, baby. I didnât mean for this. I didnât mean to hurt you,â
You looked down. âYou scared me, you asshole. I thought you didnât want to be with me anymore.â
He frowned, tapping softly on your cheek to get your attention back onto him. âIâm sorry I made you feel that way, I always want to be with you. We will figure this out, I promise you that. I.. Iâm just not good with talking about things with people, yâknowâŚâ
A soft smile spread over your face. âYeah, I know. Just.. talk to me next time, okay? I hate when we donât talk.â You said, walking into his arms.
He sighed happily at the contact, nuzzling his face his your hair to inhale your scent. âI will, my love.â He sighed, pulling back and licking his lips. âThat song, though, it was beautiful. What is it called?â
You continued to smile. âYou didnât figure it out? Itâs called âThe World We Knewâ and, before you even ask, yes, itâs about you.â
His smiled slowly faded. âI made you feel that way?â
You swallowed, your smile gone as well. âCoryo.. these past two weeks, I thought it was over between us. When I wrote that, I was trying to come to terms with it.â
âWell, now you know that weâll forever be in that world we apparently knew.â He joked, making you giggle.
He leaned forward to place a loving kiss on your lips, causing you to moan against his lips. He pulled back at the noise, looking at you with a smirk. âI have just the idea to make it up to you,â
You laughed when you saw that glint in his eye, kissing him again. âShow me what you got, big boy.â ďżź

coriolanus snow feels the sweltering heat of the hob reach up to him. heâs barely made it in two steps past the entrance, when sejanus takes off to a darker part of the activities. snow swivels his head, taking a mental note of where sejanus perches himself against a bar, but chooses against joining him.
no, he would much rather lie back here, where the music could reach him just fine. like waves.
he picks up a glass that seems full enough to the eye: the liquid swishes violently when he shoots it down his mouth and he needs a minute to savour the taste. heâs not inclined to remembering much of the academy here, choosing to focus on only getting out, but something feels familiar. an act he is piecing together carefully, meticulously, as bodies rush past him to join onto the dance floor. he feels himself already getting light with the facade heâs wringing raw. bloody, even, between his fingers.
would they believe him? would they let him go home? let him see trigris and grandâmaam one more time? would a class act ever profess to the same standards twice?
amongst his own, rotting worries, is when he sees you. not much quieter than the covey band on stage, not much louder than the crowd that followed - no, he could have lost you easily to the ruffles and the swills and the laughter. a mere stranger, much too adjusted with her tongue. but heâs curious as you approach his table.
âhi, boys. what can i get you for today?â you click your tongue, inserting a pen between your fingers and jotting down what the other men present as options of drinks. he tries to focus, clears his throat and nods along some common choice of beverage and ah, thereâs polish on your nails. scarlet and running dark, a noteworthy shade amongst that of other district folk. were you like lucy gray, a performer? or were you much like what he ran from, a class act?
but heâs far too taken to knowing who exactly you are when he sees you cut a smirk in his direction. itâs subtle and over in quick succession, but it makes him oddly glad for the shift.
âwhat?â he asks with a charm rebuilt, barely concealed fortitude crumbling when you play with your notepad. the edges of the papers you taunt with your fingernail are frayed and tearing slightly, but you still work a quick smile that sets his alarms and worries for the brighter horizon that will surely come tomorrow. really, your pretty face has him forgetting all of the quells for a minute and, instead, scope out what exactly you want from him.
you shift your garments about, meeting his eye with some supposed challenge, âhavenât seen someone like you around these parts of the district. you new?â
he nods, âyeah, iâm⌠new to this peacekeeper business.â
âyou been to the hob before?â
âno⌠not exactly, no.â
ânot exactly?â
he plays with his fingers, itching the skin softly, âjust heard a lot about this place. itâs nice.â
âmore than nice, just you see,â your pen clips to the notepad and you hark a smile at him, working your way around the men and onto the next table. your eyes beat with a play he isnât familiar with, one that makes him follow you with his eyes alone, âyou have a good time now, mr. peacekeeper.â
âitâs snow. coriolanus snow.â
âcoriolanus,â you seem to taste the name beneath your teeth, testing it tolerably and nicely, âhas a nice ring to it.â
itâs the rest of the sickly sweet night that heâs thinking of you. youâve got a sweet demeanour, a smart mouth - something worth thinking about over a drink. the hob is not quiet but not bustling either, with patrons filtering out one after another. some drunk, warm faces sit still at tables, some dance to a slow rhythm up front. sejanus leaves for a while, but snow leaves it as unnoticed. what he does notice is you in his peripheral.
youâre wiping tables, which strikes him suddenly as odd. odd that he still has the chance to catch you whilst youâre on hours. surely, you still remember him? heâd told you his name, but never breathed so much as yours. would you be freaked by his interference?
âyou look like youâve seen a ghost,â your voice is suddenly closer. youâd crossed across the bar whilst he was meandering between freakish and urbanity, and now stood smiling at him, a rag clutched at the hip. he swears his breath catches against a row in his throat, but snow catches himself quickly.
âme? mustâve overestimated my ability to drink,â he smiles, genuine since his days of relegation and spite, missing and borrowing, âare you still working?â
âhm, but i got a few minutes on the clock. then, iâm free as a birdâ when he hears you say this, his ears redden with attention. youâd be off in a few minutes?
âwhy, you wanna take me on a date?â you ask. and he spirals. and you let out a bark as he goes red from head to feet, his fingers itching his temple as he smiles. all polite and bucking at the seams, âiâm only joking, coriolanus. coriolanus - did i say it right?â
he finds your chatter endearing, meaning in every bit of movement between the two of you, âyou say it just perfect.â
he couldâve sworn he saw a flush work up those cheeks of yours, but then again, he could be losing more than just his mind. some level of sensibility, too, maybe. still, he rises to a level of action he has never been since the poor tributes, the days of reaping - maybe its initiative. maybe its the want. maybe its you between his fingers like gold.
he licks his lips, feels the wet of them against each other, âcan you i have a drink? two, actually.â
âtwo? the otherâŚ?â
he smiles, tries to imitate your sweetness and only lets it come off half baked, âfor you.â
but really, he couldnât care less. the smile that tears across your face is warm, your laugh hearty.
âmr. snow, youâve got your tricks,â the smile spills into your words, he can hear it, âwell, iâve got mine.â
and he needs to ask, what are they? can i see? am i allowed? when you kiss his cheek. nothing vehement or raunchy in the least, a thing recounted as a peck, but as you swivel towards the bar in a confident front-step, snow touches the warm part of his cheek like heâd been burnt. like he was burning still, under the pustule of the soft, flaxen light the hob had to offer. burning still, when he smiles under his hand, grinning under the gap of his fingers.
burning, still, in the grasp of wanting you beneath two drinks and a kiss.

When you first laid eyes upon the white-haired boy, you didnât think heâd become as important to you as he is now. He was assigned to be your mentor in the Hunger Games, and you were slightly relieved when you saw him standing at the train station, waiting for you.
Although you were both cautious of the other, coming from different, yet similar lands. But once you warmed up to him, you never wanted to part.
After the arena got bombed with you all in it, Coriolanus getting injured aand trapped, you stayed behind even if there was a clear opening for you to runâ because you found yourself caring for him.
He had protected you so far, treating you with kindness and respect as he guided you through this hellish period in your life. So you had to do the same. Anyways, that was what told yourself when you risked everything to stay back and attempt to help him.
You brushed your hair behind your ears, ignoring the stinging pain in your side from being burnt as you started off into a sprint towards the boy who was crying out in pain, the pole he was trapped under catching fire.
âCoriolanus!â You called out as you neared him. âIâm here, Iâm here.â You tried to soothe him as you tried to push the pole off of him.
He let out a sigh of relief at the sight of your face, and almost looked confused at your act to help him.
After a moment of struggle, you finally got the pole away from him, but it had got him badly. You immediately bent down to his level, your hands going to cradle his face softly, he leaned into it.
âOh, are you alright?â You whispered, his shaky hands coming out to grip your wrists, rubbing softly in thanks. âIâm sorry I didnât get here sooner, Iââ You did your best to explain, but you were cut off by a sharp grip on your arm, dragging you away from him. The boy reached out for you as you were taken away, only making your heart sink further into your stomach.
âNo!â You thrashed in their hold, but to no avail. You watched your mentor lose consciousness from the pain as you could do nothing to help him.
And even though you only met him a couple days prior, you realized in that very moment how much you truly did care for him.
That was one of your earliest memories of Coriolanus, the next time you saw him after that was the first time your lips touched. From that night on, you became much more to each other than you ever wouldâve guessed.
You sighed, moving from your spot in your window as reality set in. You hadnât seen the boy in question in over month. He had promised to protect you, and he kept it surely. He cheated to get you out the games, and it ended with him locked up, as you liked to believe. People around twelve said that the Capitol had him killed.
You wished he had left you to die if it meant heâd be free and you the one in the grave. You were in misery in your district, missing your lover deeply. But, alas, you had no choice. And with all the fighting you did in that arena, you refused to give up now.
Even if it meant living without the one you craved most.
You grabbed your bag, another hard breath leaving your lips as you walked out the comfort of your small home that was in the outskirts of District 12. You liked it better that way, being away from it all. When you were younger you used to live down by the Hob, which was located right next to the Hanging Tree.
After years of hearing the grueling sounds of somebody loosing their life, the jabberjays in the wind repeating their loved ones cries, sometimes even their last words, you simply couldnât bare it anymore.
So you left, opting to live out by the forest and the lake, giving you pockets of peace where you could forget it all. Or, at least the things you tried to forget. Some things seemed to haunt you forever.
You quietly walked into town to go get some food from the Mellark Bakery, your head down and gaze low the whole way. You could feel eyes on youâ you always did when you came out of your home. You hated their stares, their judgement, that was the one thing that seemed to haunt you the most.
You finally looked up, meeting eyes with your ex boyfriend who was stood with his friends, a sly smirk being worn on his face. You internally shrank, your steps picking up as you tried to get closer to your destination.
Anxiety flooded your bloodstream as you heard loud, hard footsteps pick up behind you, sounding as if they were only inching closer and closer. Your eyes screwed shut as you felt like you were back in the arena again, your flight or fight instincts kicking in.
You tried to calm yourself down, repeating the words âItâs all in your headâ like a mantra under your breath. You had recently been plagued with the worst paranoia and anxiety, and the only reason of why you could think of was because of the time you spent in that godforsaken arena. Most of the time you felt as if you being hunted, all of the horror you felt when you were in that arena never leaving your nervous system.
Most days you had to talk yourself out of a panic attack, little things setting you off and sending you into a 20 minute state of panic. It was normal to you by now, and that is what you thought was happening.
Until a harsh grip yanked you out of your head, dragging you into an alley and pinning you to a wall. A loud yelp left your lips as you hit the wall, taking you a moment to process what was happening.
When you looked up, the pit in your stomach only grew further as an overwhelming sense of dread came over you. Your ex-boyfriend, Jay, was standing over you with that same soulless smile that used to haunt your dreams.
âMy, Y/N. Itâs been a mighty long time since I done seen you around here.â He taunted, his hot breath hitting your face, causing your eyes to screw shut as the past memories of him doing this very same thing to you swirled around your brain. âThought after you got a taste of the Capitol.. of that Coriolanus Snow,â he said with disgust on his tone. âThat you thought you were too good fâme. For Twelve.â He spat, harshly.
It was funny how with a few words he could turn you right back into that naive girl he manipulated all those years ago. You cowered in fear, refusing to look him the eye.
âJay, please..â You whispered, your head turned away from him in an attempt to get as far away as possible. âJust let me go, please. I wonât come back around here, I swear.â You begged, tears filling your closed eyes as you fought for your composure.
âNah, girl.â He whispered back, getting so close to you that you could feel his breath on your cheek. âIâm gonâ do what I want with you, like old times.â
Your eyes shot open his words. âNo, God, please, no.â The tears fell from your eyes as you continued to plea with him.
âOh, câmon, Y/N.â He coldly smiled. âYou used to be fun,âYou felt his grip on your forearms travel back down to your hips, squeezing. The act left a bad taste in your mouth, making you want to throw up. You sobbed as you prepared yourself for what was coming, wishing you had just stayed cooped up in your home.
Your wails from the alley only increased in volume as his touch began to move downward. âShut the fuck up,â He hissed, his hand slapping over your mouth. You prayed to whatever God was above, wishing he would just kill you now.
And just as his hand ghosted over the waistband of your skirt, the manâs touch disappeared all together, being replaced with the sound of someone hitting the floor.
You opened your tear-stained eyes slowly to find your attacker on the ground, and in a flash of throwing punches you saw that white hair adorned by the boy you adored so much.
You stood there in shock as you watched Coriolanus, who now wore a Peacekeeperâs uniform with a shaved head, beat Jay into a pulp. Tears still left your eyes as you slid down the wall, your knees coming up to your chest as you began to process what almost just happened to you.
Anxiety took your breath from your lungs as the panic finally began to set in once you realized you were safe. Your vision started to go blurry with tears as the will to breathe got harder.
âHey, hey.â Coriolanus appeared in your line of vision, his hands wiping the tears from your face. âIâm here, youâre alright, baby.â He sighed before sitting down next to you and bringing you into his arms. You dug your head into the crook of his neck, hugging him close.
âDid he hurt you?â He asked, his hand on the back of your head, rubbing softly. He tried his best to comfort you, and tried to calm the fiery rage he felt when he saw that man on top of you.
âNâNo,â You shakily got out. âHe.. he tried toââ
Coriolanusâ head fell to your shoulder, hugging you just as tight as a sigh of relief left his lips. He had been walking by when he first heard your pleas with that man, and he dropped everything and ran at the sound of your voice. When he saw that man on top of you, the muffled sobs leaving your lips, your eyes screwed shutâ God, he saw red. He would be lying if he didnât say he didnât miss you in the time you were apart.
Your body shook with your sobs, the boyâs heart hurting of the sight of you this upset. âShh, youâre safe. Iâm here,â He repeated, leaving kisses on your face, neck, and shoulders whilst he whispered sweet nothings in your ear in an attempt to calm you.
Once you somewhat calmed down you pulled back slightly, just to make sure he was real.
âOh, Coryo,â You cried, your forehead resting on his. âThank you, thank you.â
He swallowed the lump in his throat as he took in your state. He had never seen you like this, so scared, so vulnerable. The sight of it only made him bring you back into his arms, holding you impossibly closer.
âIâve got you, my love.â He hushed your cries, leaving another kiss on your head. âNo oneâs gonna hurt you if Iâm with you, itâs okay now.â You wrapped your legs around his waist as he stood up, you still in his arms. He placed you down slightly, his hands angling your jaw up so youâd look at him. âCâmon, letâs go to your house. Get you away from this piece of shit,â he pointed to the bloodied face of Jay who was unconscious on the ground. You nodded, trying to pull yourself together, your eyes flickering back to Jay to make sure he was still knocked out.
Sensing your anxieties, he pulled you back into his arms for once last hug. âShh,â He rubbed your back. âYouâre alright. He wonât hurt you, I wonât let him.â He comforted, leaning down to kiss your tears away. His movements made you smile as you sucked in a breath before you lead him out the alley and to your home.
Once you arrived and walked through the doors, it felt as if a weight was lifted off your shoulders. You were finally home, and you had Coryo with you.
Your heart felt full as it sank in that you were finally reunited with him, with Coryo. You got him back. A smile was on your face, despite your previous cries as you turned back towards the man who shared a similar smile to yours as he looked around at your home, and launched yourself into his arms.
He chuckled slightly, hugging you back like a delicate flower in his palm. After a moment of holding each other, you pulled back again, your hands cupping his cheeks. âI thought you were dead, Coryo. I thought.. oh, I thought they took you from me.â You sighed, leaning forward to connect your lips with his for the first time in months. You poured all of the longing, all of the tears, and emotion into that kiss, trying to show all your love with just an action.
He smiled against your lips, his hands on your hips being comforting as he leaned forward, tilting his head to deepen it. When the pair of you pulled apart for air, the smiles stayed.
âYou should know by now that Iâll always find you, Y/N.â He joked, tucking hair behind your ear.
âGood,â You left one last peck to his lips, before going grabbing his hand and leading him to your bed. After all of the crying you had done in the past hour, all you wanted to do was lay with him.
He instantly knew what you were trying to do, a love-sick smile on his face as he laid down next to you, pulling you into his chest. You giggle as you settled in, your hand tracing patterns into his undershirt.
âI missed you,â He whispered after a while of quiet, looking down at you.
Blush dusted your cheeks as you rolled on your stomach to give him your full attention, your chin on his chest. âI missed you, too. Probably more.â
He smiled at your words, his hand coming up to grip yours lovingly, rubbing his thumb across the back of your hand. âYouâre beautiful,â He said after a beat of silence, admiring you in the candlelight.
You smiled at his words. âYouâre prettier, Snow.â Your gaze flickered down to your laced fingers, noticing his cut and bruised knuckles.
âOh, Coryo,â You sat up slightly, bringing his hand with you to get a closer look. âIâm sorryââ
âDonât apologize. That wasnât your fault. Iâm alright, baby, doesnât even hurt that bad.â He tried to talk you down, a soft smile still on his face.
âThank you, I mean it.â You met his eye. âI donât know what wouldâve happened if you didnât save me.â You swallowed the growing lump in your throat. âYou always save me.â
It was his turn to blush now, as you bent down to kiss his injured knuckles softly. When you finished he grabbed your jaw softly, bringing your lips to his. He kissed you hard, just like he always did. It seemed like he tried to show how much he loved you with just one simple action, and trust, he accomplished that goal.
You hummed happily against his lips, letting him pull you down on top of him, your lips still connected. When you pulled back for air, he continued to cradle your face, peppering kisses along your jaw.
âYou donât have to thank me.â He whispered, his lips still leaving kisses. âIâll always be here to protect you.â
You smiled, giggling as you snuggled closer to him. The pair of you had quieted down once again, sleep and comfort taking over your minds.
But you cracked your eyes open one last time, leaning up to leave kisses on his jaw. âI love you, Coryo.â
His eyes opened immediately as he stared down at you in shock, before a soft smile took over his face. âI love you, too.â
And just like that, all you had been longing for was under your fingertips, and you now thanked whatever God was looking down on you for bringing this man into your life.

synopsis: after years of hiding from the public, ashamed of your past and your husband, you discover the only way to end this, is with you.
ââââââââââââââââ
he had lost his mind.
in the five years since your games, you had married the man who had given dr. gaul the ideas and tools to continue with the annual hunger games. he had also been the man to mentor you, showing you to an audience to get them to love you, simultaneously he fell in love with you.
he was powerful, you knew you couldnât reject his advances, not while you were stuck behind the bars of the capital zoo. so you held his hand, listened to everything he said, winning as he promised you would.
only then did you hope that his attention on you would end, and you would be free to return home to your district, to put this part of your life behindâŚ
except it haunted you, every day, every waking moment.
you never returned home, you never saw your parents again after being reaped, he became president, and you became his wife; his first lady.
and now, president snow stood on that stage, smile blazing as he announced that the fifteenth annual hunger games would reap its tributes, from the existing pool of victors.
he had truly lost his mind.
you gripped tigrisâ arm as you watched coryo on the screen. he had just announced the changes, and you were left shocked.
tigris gulped, âi doubt he would leave your name in there.â she comforted you, âhe would never do that-â she paused, and you knew it was hesitation.
you stared at the screen, watching as the symbol of panem graced the screen, and you knew he would be home soon.
you shook your head, still in disbelief. you didnât know what to think, coriolanusâ morality scale had gotten worse as the years went by and more power came, you were unsure what he would do to anyone, let alone you.
he loved you, more than you loved him. you never forgave him for what he did to sejanus, and coriolanus knew that, but he had made it known that as long as you were alive, he would never divorce you. his little loose end.
this could be the means to an end. if coriolanus was as smart as he was told, he would leave your name in, hope for the possibility to send you to your death, tying his loose end completely.
tigris stared as you grabbed the tv clicker, clicking the buttons to turn off the awful song that blasted with the logo. it wasnât working, tigris tried to help you with it but your frustration over the games led you to slam the clicker into the tv screen, promptly breaking the screen.
coriolanus came home to a dark house. all the lights had been shut off, and he could still smell tigrisâ perfume, lingering in the living room.
he set his bag down, taking off his coat and laying it down on the couch. he could see light emanating from the bedroom, and he could hear your soft singing.
coryo smiled, slowly walking down the hall, pushing the half cracked door open, seeing you on the bed. your nightshirt hung off your shoulder slightly, and your hair was loose. you looked beautiful, in the dim candlelight.
âmy lady.â he greeted softly, bed dipping as he sat on his side. you turned, closing the novel you had been reading. you smiled softly, âcoriolanus.â he frowned slightly, going in to give you a kiss, but you turned around to put your book away, effectively dodging his kiss.
âyouâre upset.â he knew it immediately, you never called him coriolanus, not unless you were mad at him. usually he was called coriolanus every hunger games, as long as each games lasted. he had known eventually it would start up again, but this was far too early.
you didnât say anything, opting to shrug as you stood up, pulling the sheets up.
coriolanus watched you get into the bed, snuggling into the snow white sheets, trying to avoid the conversation all together.
coryo stood up, removing his shoes and tie, âyou saw the announcement.â he deduced, having put it together from the faint scent of his cousinâs perfume. âi didnât want you to see it, i wanted to tell you myself-â he kept undressing, and you sat up abruptly, âyou had all morning to tell me what you had planned, but you let me go on about my day, let me think of you fondly and for you to announce that?!â you couldnât help the tone of voice that you took with him, sometimes he was just irrational that not even you could get through to him.
he laughed softly, âso you wouldnât have thought of me fondly if i had told you before the rest of the country?â he pulled the sheets on his side of the bed up, pulling them up to his chest as he turned to face you.
your back was resting against the pillows, arms crossed as you continued, âwhy would you do that, coryo?â your voice cracked, and his expression softened. one of his only weaknessesâ was you crying, whether it was someone elseâs fault or his, it was a wretched weakness. âthe victors are victors for a reason, why do we have to fight for our lives, all over again? hmm, havenât we done enough?â you felt tears on your cheek, and you sniffled slightly.
coriolanus shook his head, ây/n, i took your name out.â he grabbed your thigh, âyou wonât even have the chance of being reaped. youâll just stand pretty on stage and watch the others get reaped.â
the others.
âyou mean the children that i mentored to fight to the death and win?â you couldnât see him through the puddles of tears in your eyes. you could only keep crying.
coriolanus stared, watching you sniffle and dab your tears away. he didnât know what to say. this was his country, but you were his wife.
âjust stand there y/n, theyâll be room for tears later.â he spat, and you stared at him in disbelief. coriolanus had become cruel, shrewd in his ways. this was a perfect example of one of the many ways he had changed.
you hauled yourself out of the bed, staring at coriolanus as you stomped out of the room. you had plenty of extra rooms in the house, and decided to go into one, leaving coriolanus to sleep in the bed by himself. he called after you, but you ignored him as you locked the door behind you.
you hadnât seen so many people gathered in a long time. they stood in rows, long rows that seem to never end from where you stood. you stood next to the other tributes from your district, younger than you, eyes full of pain and sorrow.
the bowls containing their names were placed in front, one for the girls, and another for the boys. you knew your name wasnât in there, coryo had said, ânothings changedâ.
you listened carefully as the female victor was announced. valora grove, the young girl who you had just mentored this last hunger games. you watched as she hesitated to step up, face stricken with fear, this was happening to her all over again.
âi volunteer!â you panted, stepping up as you held a hand out, blocking valora from walking any further, âi volunteer as tribute.â you repeated, chest falling heavily as you stared out into the crowd, their faces displaying plain shock.
president snowâs wife, the first lady, the tenth annual hunger games victor, had just volunteered.
coriolanus mustâve just heard the news, because as you stood forward, accepting of what was to come, you were promptly escorted from the stage by peacekeepers, thrown into a car and driven straight back to the capitol.
coriolanus was furious, you knew. you knew your husband better than anyone in the world, better than his own family. he knew you well too, but you knew this was something he hadnât anticipated, a small crack in his plans.
âyou better hope i die.â was the first thing you said to him as the car doors open, coriolanus angrily gripping onto the handle. he stood there, fuming, âwhy y/n? why would you do that, you know that i canât-â
âwhat? stop the games? of course not, that would make you look bad, coriolanus. but thatâs exactly why i did it. you have no choice.â one thing that coriolanus had forgotten about you, was that you were smart, and usually, always one step ahead of him.
âiâm still a loose end, president snow.â you reminded him, stuck staring at his piercing blue eyes as his expression warped.

After you cheated to help your tribute, Lucy Gray, you were banished to none other than District 12. Well, at first it was said to be 11, but you bribed the Peacekeeperâs with the remaining money you had.
At least in banishment you could attempt to find your songbird.
It was quite upsetting at first when you heard the news, mainly because you had to leave your friends behind, Coriolanus and Sejanus. Your family didnât care much for you, and you felt the same about them.
But you didnât have much to loose, so you were content with the decisionâ even if life in the Districts was very different than what you had previously known.
The first week, you didnât see a glimpse of the brunette, but you were also extremely busy with settling in. You got a small apartment and a job as a nurse for the Peacekeepers.
It wasnât until Saturday night when you were invited by some random girl from work to the local pub, known as the Hob. Needing some liquid courage you decided why not and tagged along.
But the second you stepped into those doors and heard that all-too familiar beautiful voice singing, your heart damn near stopped.
You canât take my charm,
You canât take my humor.
You canât take my wealth, âcause itâs just a rumor.
Nothing you can take was ever worth keeping,
No, nothing you can take was ever worth keeping.
She sung the same song she did the first time you saw her, the smile on your face only growing as she came into view. You continued your walk throughout the crowd, splitting off with the people you came with to get closer to the girl.
Thinkinâ your so fine, thinkinâ you can have mine.
Thinkinâ your in control, think youâll change me,
Maybe rearrange me, think again if thatâs your goal!
She smiled brightly as she strummed her guitar for the intermission, as when she turned her eyes fell onto you. Shock was obvious on her face, the girl almost stopping the strumming of her guitar by it. The wide eyes she had were replaced with smiling ones as it sank in. You sent a small wave and a nod her way, the girlâs smiling only growing as she ran back up to the mic.
Canât take my sass, canât talk my talkinâ.
You can kiss my ass, then keep on walkinâ.
Nothing you could take was ever worth keepinâ.
Oh, nothinâ you could take was ever worth keepinâ.
She sang her heart out, her eyes and that smile never leaving your gaze.
Nothing you could take from me is worth dirt.
Take it, âcause Iâd give it free, it wonât hurt.
Nothing you could take was ever worth keepinâ.
No, nothing you could take was ever worth keepinâ.
Her and the Covey Band finished the song with cheers and claps erupting from the crowd, more specifically, you.
âThank you, 12, for another night.â She bowed, nodding before leaving the stage.
You followed her with your gaze, shuffling through the crowd in an attempt to get to her. After a moment of shoving and apologizing, you finally got backstage.
You walked through the corridor. âLucy Gray?â You called, cautious with your steps. You nearly jumped out of your skin when she jumped on your back.
She let out giggles at your yelp, smiling against your hair as she left kisses on your neck and shoulders. The feeling of her lips on your skin sent tingles down your spine as you remembered the kisses you shared through fences in the moonlight.
âY/N!â She smiled, jumping off your back to properly hug you. She pulled your into her arms, her head going into the crook of your neck.
âHi,â You whispered as she pulled back, a smile on her face.
âI thought Iâd never see you again, oh, I thought they killed you. Thatâs what the rumors around here said.â Her southern drawl mixed with her concern pulled a smile out of you.
âIâm okay, they just banished me here.â You explained, you hand coming up to rub her worry lines away with your thumb. She smiled at the action, her hand rubbing your arm lovingly. âOther than a few punches, they treated me well. Bribed âem into putting me in twelve, yâknow I had to come back for my songbird.â You brushed some hair behind her ear.
She turned a light shade of pink at the nickname you gave to her the first time you met at the train station. âHow long are you stayinâ?â
âForever, I guess.â You shrugged. âI donât really have anyone else to go back to, really. My parents pretty much disobeyed me, and all I had at the Capitol were Coryo and Sejanus.â
âIâm sorry, Y/N.â She grabbed your hand, squeezing.
âItâs alright, bird. Iâm with you, that makes it okay.â You teased, smiling.
She stared into your eyes for a moment, her honey eyes flickering down to your lips. Without a word, she turned on her heel, her hand still laced with yours and pulled you into a small room.
You followed with furrowed eyebrows, opening your mouth to say something, but the second the door closed you were pinned to it, her lips on yours.
You moaned against her lips in shock, your hands coming up to cup her cheeks, deepening the kiss. Her hands squeezed your hips as she smiled against your lips. When you pulled back for air, the smile never left her face.
âI missed you, so much.â She whispered. âI canât wait to introduce you to the Covey, theyâre gonna love you.â
Your thumb rubbed against the scar on her cheekbone. âI canât wait either, bird.â
She left another kiss on your lips before turning on her heel, and running to the corner, rummaging through a chest on the floor.
You walked over to the middle of the room, a love-sick smile on your face as you watched the girl.
She turned back to you with the same rose you gave her all those weeks ago in the train station, a mischievous glint in her eye. When she was eye to eye with you, she presented it with a curtesy.
âY/N, will you give me the honorable title of your girlfriend?â She asked, a teasing smile on her face with a serious tone in her voice.
âWhy, yes, Ms. Baird, I would love to.â You accepted the rose, your cheeks dusted pink as she ran forward to connect your lips again, giggling.
Your heart was full as you held your songbird, love being shared in your kiss. Yeah, you thought, Iâm gonna be okay here. ďżźďżź

The bright blue sky had faded into orange and pink, you and the Covey all now scattered around the land. Maude and Lucy Gray sat on the dock, feet in the water as they sang random melodies they came up with, Issac sitting behind them drumming along with a beat.
That left you and Coryo, who were laid together on a blanket under a tree, in each otherâs arms. You laid in his lap, his arms wrapped around you, a warm feeling in the both of you chestâs. You softly sang a song to himâ one you had recently came up with.
In the time of the harvest, the leaves fallinâ down.
I held what my true love could reap from the ground.
But the bounty of a garden can all rot away,
Without love and protection and a hard will to stay.
Iâll never have a garden again.
Where I fall to my knees and work with the land.
Now Iâm just prayinâ with two dirty hands.
Iâll never, no, never have a garden again.
You finished the song with a breath, your hands going to nervously fidget.
âYour singing is beautiful.â Coryo whispered. âDid you write that?â
âYeah, I did.â You softly smiled. âItâs not done, but I came up with it the other night.â You looked up, hearing the mockingjayâs repeat the melody you had sang.
Coryo followed your gaze. âIâve never seen those type of birds before.â
âMockingjays, as we call âem, or as Lucy Gray does.â You explained, smiling at the thought of your beloved cousin.
âWell, I like it so far. Your songs are always beautiful.â He smiled, leaning down to kiss your nose.
You giggled, your hand going up to grab him to connect your lips. You exchanged a passionate kiss, the boy always kissing you like you were his air. He slowly broke apart, leaving small pecks on your lips before he pulled you closer.
âI wish it could be like this all the time,â You sighed.
âMe too, baby.â He brushed some hair out of your eyes, studying you for a moment. âIt could be⌠if you came to the Capitolââ
âNo, Coryo.â You cut him off with a wave of your hand. âI mean out here. In nature, away from it all. I donât want to go back to the Capitol ever again. I donât belong there.â
He deflated, shaking his head. âY/N, you know I have to go back eventually..â
A breath of air left your lips, his words leaving you frowning. âI know,â your eyes casted downwards, away from his.
He bent down slightly, leaving a kiss on your lips. âIâm not gone yet, my songbird. Iâm still here,â
His actions brought a small smile to your face, as your hands came up to grip his lovingly. âI.. Iâm sorry I make things difficult. Iâm torn, Coryo. I donât want to be without you, but I refuse to live that life in the Capitol.â
âYou donât make things difficult, my love. I understand. You were brought up out here, itâs your home.â He muttered, staring into your eyes with a loving gaze. âI will figure it outâ We will. Donât worry, baby.â He left another kiss on your lips, this one longer and washing all of your worries away. When you pulled back for air, the boy turned to dig in his bag, turning back to you with an orange shawl in his hand.
âWhatâs this?â You asked, sitting up and turning to him.
He swallowed the lump in his throat, passing it to you. âIt was my motherâs, and Iâd like for you to have it.â
âOh, Coryo,â You smiled, clutching it. âThank you, really.â You brought up to your nose, inhaling deeply. âMm, still smells like roses.â
He smiled down at you with adoration.
âIâll take good care of it, I promise. Thank you, sweetheart.â You said, your accent showing. âYou must miss your family so much out here.â
âI do.â He answered. âI worry about them all the time.â
ââŚWould you really go back, though?â You met his eye again. âIf you could,â
âI have to, itâs where I belong. Like how you belong out here.â
You nodded, breaking your eye contact. âYeah, I get it. Iâm sorry.â Your gaze turned back to the water in front of you.
âHey..â He scooted closer to you.
You shook your head. âWhat if this was our life, Coriolanus?â You asked, and his attention was immediately on you with the use of his actual name. âOut here, waking up whenever. Catching our own food, living out by the lakeâ I mean, would you still feel the need for the Capitol even then?â You further went on, urging him to listen to you.
âHey, lovebirds!â Lucy Gray called with a giggle, causing the pair of you to break apart. âCâmere! CeCe and Issac caught dinner!â She waved, as Issac held up some fish they had caught.
You sighed, shaking your head once again at Coryo before you stood up to join them, Coriolanus on your tail.
As the night went on, the previous worries were now in the back of your mind as you sang a song with Lucy Gray, a smile on your face.
However, as Coriolanus watched you, the same worries were front and present in his mind. In fact, he couldnât think of anything else. He knew somehow, someway he had to convince you to come with him. He couldnât leave you behind, not again.
He didnât know if youâd still be here when he got back.
âWhat if this was our life, Coriolanus? Would you still feel the need for the Capitol, even then?â Your past words ringing in his ears as his smile dropped. If he didnât lure you in soon, youâd fly away with the mockingjays into the wind, never to be his again.
He couldnât have that.

A bright smile adorned your face as you ran through the flower field with your cousins, Lucy Gray & Maude Ivory.
You and the Covey were showing your boyfriend, Coryo, the secret spots of paradise you had found during your time in District 12. Since the Seam wasnât the most peaceful place, you and your family opted to find your own sanctuary.
You always had, specially when you were kids, before you got rounded up by the peacekeepers. You all moved where the wind took you, never staying in one spot for long.
You missed it.
But, this was okay, you thought to yourself. You still had some of the people you cherished most, some you had lost along the way.
You were grateful regardless, enjoying the time you spent with your loved ones.
Lucy Grayâs laugh rang in your ears as Maude began to sing another one of her tunes she had came up with.
Out of breath, the three of you slowed down, walking at a normal place.
âLord, that kid. Sheâll be singing until she goes to the grave.â You joked, your thick accent smiling with your features.
Lucy laughed with you, locking your elbow with hers. âSounds like a good way to go if you ask me.â
You nodded.
Lucy Gray sent a smile your way before breaking off to catch up to Maude Ivory, who was bent down ahead of you, looking at some swamp potato, or Katniss, as Lucy liked to call it.
You shook your head with a smile as you heard Lucy tell her for the 10th time that it was too early for it to be ripe. Sighing softly, you enjoyed the flowers surrounding you, the sunshine on your skin, and the wind in your hair.
That was until you felt the grip of your lover on your hips, your heart immediately soaring in your chest.
He walked with you, his hands still on you as he came to walk beside you now.
âItâs beautiful out here,â You murmured.
He looked to you with a smile, the hand that was around your waist now going to grip your hand. âWhere did you say we were going again?â
âTo the lake.â You smiled. âMaude Ivory found it a couple months ago when we were explorinâ.â
He hummed in delight. âHavenât swam in ages.â
âWell, Iâm sure youâll love it,â You linked your arm with his, leaning your head on his shoulder with a smile. âItâs almost as gorgeous as you, darlinâ.â You teased.
He shook his head, breaking eye contact with you. âI doubt that.â
âYouâll see, Snow.â
After more walking and chasing after Maude, you and the Covey finally arrived.
Maude immediately took off, running into the water, the others following suit.
You turned to Coryo with a grin as you slipped off your sundress, leaving you in your cyan swimsuit. With a wink, you turned on your heel and ran for the water, diving in.
When you resurfaced, you were met with a splash of water and saw white hair emerging from the water.
You felt his hands creep up your back before you saw him, a smile gracing your face. He gripped your waist, pulling you into his chest as he kissed your head.
You sat in his embrace for a while, simply enjoying your time with the boy.
âThank you for this,â He whispered into your hair. âI mean it.â
You turned around in his arms. âWhat do you mean?â
âFor taking me out here, showing me your space. And taking me away from that god awful district.â He joked with a smile.
You laughed. âYouâre right. Itâs wretched. If it wasnât for the Covey, I wouldâve made a run for it a while ago.â
He stopped for a moment at your words, his eyebrows furrowing. âYou would?â
You nodded. âYes. I hate it here. The peacekeepers rounded us up a year or two ago. Killed my and Lucy Grayâs mama in the process. A lot more too.â You sighed, looking down at the water. âBefore, it was so nice. We had our own family. Since we been here⌠Itâs been a struggle, Iâll tell you that much.â
His hand came up to cup your cheek. âIâm sorry. Iâll make sure thatâll never happen again.â
âYou canât promise that, Coryo. And thatâs okay.â You sadly smiled, taking his hand and kissing it before swimming to your family.
The white-haired boy stood still in the water, watching you swim away as he processed your words.
Heâd prove you wrong.
He was sure of it.
After all, Snow lands on top, and he was surely taking you with him. No matter what.
