Well if you can’t recreate the iconic expressive character designs of the animated version, than don’t make it in live action!

A remake should improve, not downgrade, and the visuals are a downgrade, even though the original came out in 1994.

Can’t really help comparing it to the animated version when this remake is completely unnecessary and can’t live up to the gorgeous timeless animation of the original! Advanced CG doesn’t automatically make a movie good.

But in seriousness heres the problem of remaking an animated film like The Lion King in live action

In the original, the designs are very expressive and distinct, each character looks different/has different body language and facial features that display their character perfectly

Scar is sly and cunning, so his mane, body, movements, and expressions all match that perfectly. His animation during the line “Why if it isn’t my big brother….” comes to mind

Whereas Mufasa is respectable and powerful but wise, hence he’s always upright, has a powerful build and thicker mane, and can easily go from looking stern af to looking friendly and calm.

The stellar voice cast also played a part in this

In the live action trailer, There’s no emotion in the characters faces, all their expressions look the same to me, even when they’re in peril or emotional distress

Particularly at 1:00 when Scar tells Simba to leave, and Simba has a normal ass lion expression whereas in the original he was clearly crying and scared

Or I can’t even tell what they’re expressing because they look like normal ass animals. That’s boring!

A film like The Lion King does not work in live action, nor do most of the live action remakes Disney is churning out.

…and it’s probably gonna make like a billion dollars cause of course it will and “OMG That Movie was my childhood and Beyoncé is in it squeeeeee!” -_-

Ok but something that really struck out to me in Free Churro was Butterscotch telling young BoJack that after seeing “A Dolls House” (WHICH IS BASED OFF OF IBSEN BTW) Beatrice locked herself in the bedroom to LOUDLY SOB. After seeing in Season 4 how her father messed her up so much and permanently scarred her to not cry or show any kind of “womanly emotion”, that movie must have REALLY done something to her to actually make her not just cry but sob hysterically.

I didn’t see Ralph 2 because it looked middling and I wasn’t really interested.

I did see Toy Story 4 though! 8/10. My big worry with this movie was that they would need a REALLY solid story to tell after such a solid series finale in Toy Story 3, and I wasn’t sure if they’d be able to find a good enough plot to justify making a 4th one.

Honestly they didn’t! But the movie was still pretty cute.

It’s always fun to see how they toy-ify different areas and bring new kinds of toys to life. The Antique Store/Pop-Up Carnival was a cool new setting. I think Toy Story would work much better as a TV show than movies. The strength of the series is the cutesy one-off characters they bring in for a handful of jokes and the creative new locations and toy communities. With a TV show they’d be able to establish new areas every episode without dragging the one-bit characters out longer than they had to. Like, Kaboom was cute. The Bunny+Bird prize toys were fun enough. But were they fun enough to be supporting characters for 2 hours? Probably not! Would they be excellent in a 30-minute episode? Absolutely.
