A few days ago, I put on a video of a girl watching Anora as a background. I'm Ukrainian, so watching the movie itself is not an option; too much exposure to the russian culture makes me wanna explode à la Soldier Boy.

And the only point that made the reviewer pause and talk for several minutes?

It wasn't the stereotypical "a girl from Eastern Europe is a stripper / an escort / a mail-order bride". It wasn't the way the russian oligarch-junior treated the main character. It wasn't the scene in which russian oligarch-senior's goons completely destroyed someone's small business.

Nope.

The watch-along girl was indignant because the main character used a slur while arguing with the goons. You know, the people who called her a whore, attacked her and tied her up.

Now, I'm usually the annoying woke friend who would tell you to avoid using people's nationality or sexual orientation as a means to offend them. But if the person in question is attacking you - you don't fucking owe them anything. You have no obligation to be polite or respectful towards a guy who tries to tie you up or a guy who calls a slur based on your profession.

I'm starting to understand how Mr "Why aren't you wearing a suit?" got elected though...

i don't know why but i have this imagination of a what if. like what if when felix was partying in a club, anora met him instead of vanya then fun happened between them and felix grew to like her. i just knew he would like anora, cause who wouldn't like her? she's beautiful, she's great, a queen, she could stand up for herself and could definitely fire back whenever she's in an unfair position. and her job is no joke, i'm not even gonna romanticize that or anything. and felix— who doesn't like felix? like it's hard to love felix.

i could just imagine the level of upgrade she would get if she only married or at least got into a relationship with fel instead. like, the man has taste. he has common sense, he has a heart, he's responsible, he has brains, he's educated, his peers are decent, his home is fantastic, he could handle himself, he's rich, matured at the very least and his family adores him.

the cattons, though has their own types of nuts in their back pockets, would surely accept her and let her in. not why not, but cause of this idea that if felix is happy and trusts anora, then okay. sure, there'll be some tight spots and daddy might scrutinize her by her career and farleigh might poke around and test what kind is she but mostly, they won't mind. and i would love to see venetia do some shopping and salon with ani, ani having some chat and gossip session over champagne with elspeth in gown, and anora have some argument with farleigh cause they're both divas at their own right and they might have bits of common ground? cause farleigh is also from the lower class working his way up and keeping stations in saltburn.

for me, or the one perched on my left shoulder, someone like (but not exactly) felix would definitely treat her better than just the girl who likes pole but as the person she is. felix judges and befriends people by their character, like what happened to him and oliver— aww, poor ollie, am gon' be his friend huhu— but anora isn't like that. she's honest, she's open, she don't accept pity or shits and just be herself; and she do what she has to do while also hoping that someday, she'll get her star and fly away far from the strip club and live a life she deserves.

so, even if it might be transactional at first between anora and felix, i feel like the feelings fel paid for will eventually come true. and they'll be perfect for each other. cinderella and prince charming in a place called saltburn. but, well, ollie oil unfortunately exists— at the end, we accept the love we thought we deserve.

I'm actually so fucking jealous of everyone who got/gets to see anora early

I just watched anora and immediately went to search for what the directer's interpretation of what the ending was and suffice to say I really don't think that is a good explanation.

Anora is a sex worker, we see how in the times she's with Ivan she's doing that, that's what she knows how to do. We aren't told much about her life but from what we know about sex workers it can be a traumatic livelyhood. For example I think her going by Ani is possibly a way for her to create a persona so the emotional toll of what she's doing doesn't affect her as badly.

Throughout the first hour of the film she's living this fantasy life and she's probably thinking now she can get out. However when Ivan's parents disapproval come into the picture that is shattered. The whole time she's looking for Ivan and getting the annulment she's actively fighting against it as she does not want the fantasy to end. This is also where her character comes into play she's strong and independent. She wants to be taken care of but realistically you've only got yourself in this world. Her character directly contrasts Ivan. He's a childish playboy who just wants to party and piss off his parents. His parents defending his every action and Toros cleaning up his fuck ups does not help him at all either. He does not stand up to his parents because he knows hell be cut off, he can entertain the idea but never truly live it. (referencing when he proposes to Ani) All this to say he's a spineless mommy's boy and unfortunately Anora would not have gotten her fantasy life from him.

This brings me to the ending. I'm not gonna generalize her I'm just going to analyze based off of her actions in the movie. Also what happened between her and Igor I'm gna label as the car scene.

Anora has insulted Igor the entire time however he is still nice to her because ultimately she got screwed over and put in a situation she did not ask for. And even after he's still helping her driving her home when Ivan just screwed her over and used her. She obviously allowed herself to get comfortable and allowed herself to get feelings for him. She's emotionally drained and probably traumatised. Throughout her time with Ivan she was sleeping with him. I heavily disagree with the director saying she slept with Ivan to "take back her power" and symbolizing her "entering into a new relationship where she has control"

That implies what she had with Ivan was a relationship. It was not. I think the poor girl was so traumatised from the situation and this guy was being kind to her, so she did what she thought she should to thank him. I that situation he just sat back and let her (i also don't like him in that situation) HOWEVER he did stop when she started broke down. And I think it was because him trying to kiss her was the first shred of humanity she was shown since she met Ivan. He was simply kind to her because unlike Ivan he didn't want anything from her. Which I don't think she's experianced much. The entire time she was referred to as a prostitute, hooker and escort. Meant to demean and dehumanise her. Ultimately the whole ordeal was dehumanising and I think she reacted in a way that was normal to her. Except this time it was much worse and she ended up breaking down.
