Thanksgiving...in Space

Since 2000, humans have continuously lived and worked on the International Space Station. That means plenty of crew members have celebrated holidays off the Earth.

image

Although they’re observing the same holidays, they do so in a slightly different way because of the unique environment 250 miles above the Earth.

Consider the differences of living on Earth and in space…

image

Food scientists must develop foods that will be easier to handle and consume in an environment without gravity. The food must not require refrigeration and also provide the nutrition humans need to remain healthy.

image

Freeze drying food allows it to remain stable at room temperature, while also significantly reducing its weight.

image

Did you know that all the food sent to the space station is precooked? Sending precooked food means that it requires no refrigeration and is either ready to eat or can be prepared by simply adding water or by heating.

image

The only exception are the fruit and vegetables stowed in the fresh food locker. The food comes in either freeze-dried containers or thermostabilized pouches. If freeze-dried in a vacuum sealed package, the astronauts have a rehydration system in-flight, which they use restore moisture in their food.  If thermostabilized, the packaging is designed to preserve the food similar to canned products, but instead in a flexible, multi-layered pouch.

So what will the space station crew eat this year (2016) for Thanksgiving?

Turkey

Cherry/Blueberry Cobbler

Candied Yams

Rehydratable Cornbread Dressing

Rehydratable Green Beans and Mushrooms

Rehydratable Mashed Potatoes

What are you bringing to Thanksgiving on Earth this year? Treat your family and friends astronaut-style with this cornbread dressing recipe straight out of our Space Food Systems Laboratory…no freeze drying required!

image

For spaceflight preparation:

Baked dressing is transferred to metal tray and freeze-dried accordingly. One serving of cornbread dressing shall weigh approximately 145 g prior to freeze-drying and 50 g after freeze-drying.

Science Balloons on Parade

image

You might see some of your favorite characters bobbing through the streets of New York City during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but did you know that NASA's got some balloons of our own? Early December in Antarctica, we're planning to launch some behemoth balloons carrying science experiments and instruments to help unravel mysteries of our universe.

image

Like the parade balloons, these scientific balloons are filled with helium. But the science balloon is designed to soar above 130,000 feet, past the clouding views of our atmosphere. They can stay in the air from 2 hours to 100 days, depending on the balloon type and how heavy the science payload is (up to 6000 lbs). A typical, fully-inflated scientific balloon can be 460 ft in diameter and 396 ft in height, made of acres of sandwich bag-looking film. That’s MUCH larger than some parade balloons, and probably a pain to bring down 6th Avenue.

Like the parade balloons, these scientific balloons are filled with helium. But the science balloon is designed to soar above 130,000 feet, past the clouding views of our atmosphere.

So why launch these balloons in Antarctica? Winter in the South Pole means 24 hours of non-stop sunlight, which is great for studying our sun. Being at the poles, which has a weaker magnetic field than the rest of our planet, also means we can capture and study cosmic ray particles that would be too scattered by the Earth’s magnetic field elsewhere. Depending on the kind of science we'd like to do, we also launch balloons from places all over the world.

These balloons are great, inexpensive test-beds for scientific instruments that could one day end up on a space-bound mission. NASA's NuSTAR mission started out as a balloon experiment before it was refined and launched into space to study black holes and other supernova remnants. Learn more about our balloons, and see where these balloons are going using our tracker.

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I’m visiting family for the holidays, but I’m still thinking about my comic projects

On one side is The Eldrich Journal, the first arc in my (as of now) unnamed comic series. I’m very very passionate about this project because it is based around my personal beliefs and has characters that I’ve lovingly made and hold dear to my heart.

On the other side is a Legend of Zelda Fan Comic called Follow Till the End featuring the classic Link x Dark Link ship, but in Breath of the Wild! This one was requested to be made when I posted a similar pic joking about how I wish there were more Link x Dark Link fanworks set in BotW. I’ve already got a general story and plotline written out in my head, the trouble is gonna be drawing some of those amazing background settings in the game, since I’m more suited to drawing characters, but I’ll do my best!

So let me know what you guys think! Which ones are you more interested in, any questions you have about them, or any other requests you may have

Funny Ode To Thanksgiving May Your Stuffing Be Tasty May Your Turkey Plump, May Your Potatoes And Gravy

Funny Ode to Thanksgiving May your stuffing be tasty May your turkey plump, May your potatoes and gravy Have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious And your pies take the prize, And may your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off your thighs! A Poem for Thanksgiving The year has turned its circle, The seasons come and go.  The harvest all is gathered in And chilly north winds blow. Orchards have shared their treasures, The fields, their yellow grain, So open wide the doorway, Thanksgiving comes again.  [Author: Unknown] #happythanksgiving #turkeyday #thanksgiving #healthythanksgiving #TurkeyTime #Thanksgivingmenubloghop #thankfulday agivingdinner #ThanksgivingCountDown #TurkeyTweet #TheBestThingAboutThanksgiving #thankful #thanks #thankyou #givethanks #givingthanks #blessed #giving #family #friends #celebrate #blessings #countyourblessings #thankfulness #holiday #gratitude #fall2017 #giveback #givingback #fall #autumn (at West Sacramento, California)
