dude seeing these Mega high quality images of the surface of mars that we now have has me fucked up. Like. Mars is a place. mars is a real actual place where one could hypothetically stand. It is a physical place in the universe. ITS JUST OUT THERE LOOKING LIKE UH IDK A REGULAR OLD DESERT WITH LOTS OF ROCKS BUT ITS A WHOLE OTHER PLANET?Â
It was HACK WEEK at Tumblr and Automattic earlier this month! Just like back in June, we stopped our normal work to focus on some great possible new features, some bug fixing, and more. Hereâs a taste of some of the projects that got hacked together. Some of these will hopefully make it to be real new parts of Tumblr, but as always, we canât guarantee anything here with a timeline or even that theyâll ever see the light of day again -- theyâre hacks!
L and @superchlorine are working on fixing a lot of issues about how we parse tags in URLs, so that we are more consistent across the web and the apps. This is something that we know has been frustrating for a long time: trying to search for posts tagged with a + sign or with spaces often doesnât work as youâd expect. But not for much longer! Weâve been slowly fixing these issues one at a time and posting about it on the Changes blog.
This actually carried over from a previous Hack Day: the ability to click a little đ„ button on a post, throw down some cash, and promote that post as a Sponsored post across Tumblr. Thereâd be some kind of moderation queue on our side to ensure nothing unsafe gets sponsored in this way, and any sponsored post would be âfrozenâ and not editable during the time itâs being promoted. The Ads Core team, lead by @thstall with help from Argyris, Oleg, and Nathan took this pretty far towards being production-ready.
We really want as many people as possible to protect their accounts by leveraging Two Factor Authentication, which you can currently enable by going to your account settings on the web. But itâd be even better to be able to access these settings in the mobile apps themselves! Megs, Adam, and Eduardo are still working to make this a reality.
For those of you who remember this experiment in Tumblr Labs, this is a popup you can check out on posts which shows you a graph of all of the reblogs on a post and how theyâre connected. This is one crazy way you can visualize how posts on Tumblr get reblogged around in huge chains and clusters! @cyle got a working React-based prototype working for Hack Week, and now weâre working to bring this back to the web for real.
Connie and the Post+ team built a prototype of Fan Funding on Tumblr, to help creators set a funding goal and get to that goal, using a lot of the same technology we used to create Post+.
Stay tuned to the @changes blog to find out if any of these end up becoming a part of Tumblr for real!
I love tumblr. I love that tumblr is the best social media site of 2021.
Every other site has spent the last decade perfecting the art of targeted ads. I am a wallet of flesh and blood which must be stripped bare and profiled and picked apart for the maximally efficient way to squeeze profit from my presence. Every other site will fold and morph itself to a shape of my liking - like a fairy tale trickster stealing memories and taking their mold - to lull me into compliance and loosen my coin purse.
Facebook sees me searching fitness equipment and injects my timeline with athletic wear ads. Reddit profiles the subreddits I follow and eagerly promotes a new coding bootcamp or cloud service at every turn. Google overhears me lamenting over my moving to-do list on voice call and fills in my âhow much to tip moversâ query before Iâve gotten the third word typed out.
Tumblr never even tried.
They could have. The information is there. The basic infrastructure, presumably, exists. Tumblr can recommend me tags based on tags I follow, blogs based on blogs I follow, even posts that for one reason or another may strike my fancy. Tumblr could be - SHOULD be - funneling this framework into advertising, as the only means that free-to-use social media platforms can turn a profit in our capitalistic hellscape.
They just donât.
Today I saw an ad for treating Hyperhidrosis - a condition, I think, in which a person sweats too much - and I saw it twice, four posts apart, and it is so incredibly benignly impersonally ineptly untargeted toward me compared to all other pinpoint-aimed advertising that Iâm endeared to it. Tumblr knows NOTHING about me. 8 years, 51,000 likes, and tumblr has not learned a THING about me.
Advertisements for a mattress? Shitty mobile game ads that donât make even the slightest pretense at being anything other than a candy crush rip-off? Choose-your-own adventure games either about Royal Espionage or Choosing The Wrong Dress For Your Date with ZERO in-between.
And then this. This here. The culmination, the crown-jewel of tumblrâs nihilistic non-compliance with the state of social media advertising. Any pretense of capitalistic exchange is abandoned at the gas station by the side of the road. This is not a company. This is not a product. This is not anything that fulfills the contract of consumer and seller.Â
THIS. THIS IS WHAT TUMBLR HAS TO OFFER INSTEAD.
âPour vinegar on your bread, fuck you.â
âPut it in the garbage, fuck you.â
âYour wife says youâre a fucking dumbass, fuck you.â
Thatâs it. Thatâs the advertisement. You vinegar-breadless cuck. You virgin extraordinaire bereft of bread and garbage can. I am fucking your wife right now in our vinegar-soaked motel bed. She puffs a cigarette which I pulled from the trashcan and we both laugh heartily at her recounts of your immasculine ineptitude. I donât want your money. I donât want anything from you. Fuck you.Â
Amazing. Amazing. What a state of things to ring in 2021. What a great platform we all collectively choose to be on.
Tumblr engineering...
We do what we must, because we can.
For the good of all of us,
Except the ones who are banned.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of bells.
And the engineering gets done, and you dev some neat crabs,
For the people who are still around
talking with americans as a foreigner is wild theyâll ask if youâre familiar with the concept of movie theaters and then 2 sentences later they go what do you mean you donât have Whataburger in your country
It was Hack Day once again at Tumblr! A couple of times per year we grind everything to a halt and spend 24 hours working on whatever we want and see how far we can get with our hacks. Here are some of the projects that got made for Hack Day! Some of these things you may end up seeing on the siteâŠ
Wesley hacked together the ability to post Twitch streams to Tumblr! These can be live streams or clips.
@cyle put together a very simple webhook integration between Tumblr and Discord so you can send events about your blog to a Discord server:
@mlu, @dakotairene, and friends hacked together the ability for us to put custom Tumblr logos in the mobile appsâ dashboard tab bar, like we do on the web!
Lucila constructed an elaborate Tumblr Time Machine, so you can filter search results to a specific year:
Stay tuned to the @changes blog to see if any of these hacks make it on Tumblr for real!
crossed 3,000 pull requests last week in the tumblr backend repo đ good eight year anniversary metric. that's 375 PRs per year, more than 1 per day. woweeee.
