accidents happen. especially when it's late at night and there's alcohol involved. this isn't an excuse or a stretch of any kind, really - it's quite logical if you think about it. so, following that train of thought, what happened between him and eoin was an accident. a one time thing. until it wasn't. it was a little awkward at first. meeting the irish the next day, facing him after what they'd done. paddy's there with him, too, and the guilt the french feels is overwhelming. augustin barely acknowledges them, sticking to greeting them with a curt nod, choosing instead to focus on the maniac rambles of one david stirling. the guilt, which doesn't leave, turns into something else when he notices eoin's hand on paddy's leg. an attempt at calming him down, surely, as the words he exchanged with stirling grew more vapid. a simple, slow brush of the thumb and augustin is all but whining, suddenly faced with a hunger, a fire he has never felt before. this irrational reaction embarrasses him greatly and he downs the pint in front of him, excusing himself from the group gathering to go work on his thesis. later, when he's in his room, a bunch of nonsensical scribbling now adorning his newest draft, he hears a knock on the door. it's eoin mcgonigal himself, greeting him with a costa cup and a gentle smile. '--figured you could use some coffee if you want to pull an all nighter.' they stare at each other for a moment, idiotically so, in silence. then, somehow, a compromise is reached, and they stumble together into the room, lips locked together in a passionate fashion. augustin doesn't even know where the cup of coffee is dropped, for all he can focus on now is how incredible it all feels: the brushing of their lips, the pressing of their bodies; eoin shivering under his touch.

it doesn't make sense. they're not drunk, it's not the end of a long, tiring night. yet here they are, fervently kissing and seemingly unable to stop. he wraps his arm around the irishman's waist and tugs him closer, basking in his warmth, his receptiveness. eoin responds by moaning against his mouth, weakly, beautifully.

when they fall into bed together, augustin promises nothing serious will happen. it's just kissing.

it's just kissing, isn't it?

to say he was expecting it was a lie. he knew eoin mcgonigal, considered him a friend - much like the rest of the lads. he was great fun: good with words, witty head on his shoulders and sharp tongue to follow. augustin also knew eoin mcgonigal was irrefutably in love with paddy mayne. it was clear in the way they looked at each other, the curly-haired irish not doing much to hide the affection lingering within his gaze. it showed in the way they always orbited one another, close proximity a necessity for them. it was endearing and alluring and it made him want to look away. (though it also made him want to take a closer look.)

so, when they drink that night, the only two left after a jolly night out, he wasn't expecting them to laugh this hard; wasn't expecting them to tease each other this much or to find so much delight in spending time together, just the two of them.

he also wasn't expecting the sudden, somewhat tense silence that settled between them. wasn't expecting their animated words to turn into hushed whispers. wasn't expecting eoin's drifting eyes to find his mouth.

augustin definitely wasn't expecting for them to kiss. for eoin's lips to be so warm, so receptive, so sweet. it doesn't make much sense, yet, somehow, it does. teeth finds skin, tongue meets tongue. lovely. perfect.

the kiss is interrupted by the cheering of a rowdy group of teenagers nearby, playing some silly drinking game. they stare at each other, breathless, both visibly surprised.

ah, putain.

augustin jordan may have locked eyes with paddy mayne in the beginning of it all. accidentally, of course, and without much consequence, though his physical features attracted him at once - his intense gaze, in particular, seemed to burn into him like the scorching sun. he may have locked eyes with paddy mayne. may have felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to get to know him, try and figure out what he was about. solve the equation that he could perfectly see, set and guarded in front of him.

but it was eoin mcgonigal he kissed first.

canon au eoin-survives-the fall hc ish ???

Just picture Augustin looking at Eoin and paddy (as a pair) and him trying to figure them out and ofc his first thought is paddy is the moon and Eoin is the sun ??? Besides of the straightforward comparison just by looking at them and seeing them behave, there's no denying that paddy seems to shine when he's hit by eoin's light, whenever he is around the man

And that seems all fair and good, but something is not quite right anyway? Because the sun and the moon don't orbit each other the way they do - you could argue they helplessly follow one another, never quite meeting but. Even if unsaid, Augustin would propose there's actually something there, paddy and eoin are meeting (however one wished to interpret that). So the analogy doesn't fully track and he shouldn't even think about it that much bc like. Who cares, right? Except he does, and he keeps looking at them and observing them and he wriggles himself sort of next to them whenever he's allowed to, or between them, and he pays attention but still can't put his finger on it

Until there's a mission with both Irishmen leading different squads and augustin happens to see with his very eyes how Eoin mcgonigal goes absolutely feral when paddy does not show up at rendezvous point with his unit. He doesn't scream but he growls, and he very much still raises his voice, firm and with authority, and it booms through the desert, and Augustin literally sees him get all up on reg fucking seekings' personal space, grab him and rough him up against the nearest surface, yell and demand about paddy in more languages than augustin knew eoin was fluent in

-- until paddy does show up. A bit dirty and with probably some bruises, but very much alive and kicking

And everything in eoin mcgonigal's body comes undone, all pliant and invitingly gentle again - even if he does get on Paddy's case about his recklessness

And that's when Augustin comes to the conclusion that whereas paddy is indeed the moon (lunatic that he is,) Eoin is but the earth - they are constantly orbiting each other, eoin's gravity pulls paddy in at every turn.

But most importantly, Eoin needs Paddy the way the earth needs the moon to control the tides. With them gone, tsunamis would wreak havoc inside Eoin mcgonigal, taking anyone who dares come close in the process.

It's somehow fascinating and, dare he say, somewhat alluring.
