The fact that what started The Haunting Of Bly Manor was Viola Lloyd and all her anger and her spite and her selfishness and her possessiveness mistaken for manifestations of love.
Viola, who was unwilling to allow her disease to take away her life so stubbornly to the point that death stopped coming to her house.
When she believed her death imminent in the near future, she made her husband vow, not to move on or to find happiness, but to store away her most valued possessions - and therefore herself - and give them only to their daughter when she came of age. She remained trapped with those possessions within a trunk in the attic until the day it was opened, not by her daughter, but by her sister, who became her first victim. She was abandoned by her family for her sin, and from that point forward her rage and her belief in the unfairness of her circumstance trapped not only her but all those who died on the grounds of Bly.
The fact that Peter Quint died taken by the lady in the lake and dragged Rebecca down with him and that every aspect of their relationship was based on possession.
The fact that Dani faced the same choice but didn't even consider for one second putting Jamie's life at risk. The fact that Jamie wanted to go down with her, but Dani refused to do so. The fact that every aspect of their relationship was based on love.
And the fact that that is what broke the curse.
"People do, don't they? Mix up love and possession?" "Yeah." "I don't think that should be possible."
Episode 5 of the Haunting of Bly Manor makes me sick. Hannah, sweet Hannah, spending the episode in confusion slowly realizing she’s dead. She’s dead and she’s been dead and yet even in death she isn’t free. The cruel irony of discussing a future in Paris with Owen. And yes she turns him down but even if she hadn’t, it wouldn’t have mattered. None of it matters cause nothing could be avoided. She speaks of the mouse and the glue trap and that was always supposed to be her fate. Things change and life moves forward and sometimes you can’t move with it. And what are you supposed to do with that? What can you do?
HE EVEN LOOKS LIKE JAMES POTTER ARE YOU KIDDING ME
i’m rewatching the haunting of bly manor and even though he only gets about five minutes of actual screen time, dani and edmund’s storyline is so jily-coded. Edmund (James) obsessed with this girl he found so cool and ambitious, Dani (Lily) a closeted lesbian who’s too scared to come out and ruin everything. Like his speech at their engagement party where he talks about proposing to her, and getting rejected, from the time they were 10 until their mid 20s when she finally says yes. Maybe i’m just too obsessed with james potter and now i’m seeing him everywhere, but tell me i’m wrong??

my emotional support family - the haunting of bly manor (2020): family portraits
the unconventional family we all deserve: a housekeeper, a cook, an au pair, a gardener and two possessed kids. this show was so lovely, mike flanagan created another amazing set of fictional characters that i wish were real, and another beautiful and heartbreaking story (featuring lesbians, the haunting universe = the sapphic universe).
“At long last, deep within the au pair’s heart, there was peace, and that peace held for years, which is more than some of us ever get.”
