A black and white comic page. At the top is a panel of a man watching two people pull up nettles with the words "One day he saw some country people busily engaged in pulling up nettles". Below that is a drawing of two hands holding a dried nettle stalk and the words "he examined the plants, which were uprooted and already dried, and said: 'They are dead. Nevertheless, it would be a good thing to know how to make use of them."
A black and white comic. In the first panel is a steaming bowl in front of a chair on a table with the words "When the nettle is young, the leaf makes an excellent vegetable." In the second panel is a close up drawing of a person's hand making cordage with the words "when it is older, it has filaments and fibres like hemp and flax." In the third panel a woman is holding up a sheet of fabric as if to fold it, with the words "Nettle cloth is as good as linen cloth." In the fourth panel a chicken is pecking at the ground with the words "Chopped up, nettles are good for poultry." At the bottom of the page is a drawing of nettles in a basket and the words "With the exercise of a little care, the nettle could be made useful;"
A black and white comic. In the first panel, a doorway in a brick wall is partially overgrown with nettles and has the words "it is neglected." In the second panel there is a hand with a rash and the words "and it becomes hurtful." At the bottom, from left to right is drawn a scythe, a dead nettle lying on the ground, nettle stumps, and some living nettles, all with the words "It is exterminated"
A black and white drawing of a man in early 19th century clothing, in his shirt sleeve and holding a hat, looking at a nettle plant. Words read "How many men resemble the nettle!"

He added, after a pause: “Remember this, my friends: there are no such things as bad plants or bad men. There are only bad cultivators.”

the other day I was taking a walk when I saw this old guy trapped under a cart. people were trying to help him but it was too heavy so I stepped forward and lifted it off him (I work out a lot.) then, this old police inspector told me I had to be a convict because of how strong I was. I looked him straight in the eye and said, “it’s 1815. anyone can be strong, including non felons, women, and gay people. the only person who’s weak here is you.” he started crying and gave me fifty crowns while everyone clapped, even the nuns

Ugh, okay. Unfollowing. I was a big fan of his tenure as mayor and subsequent adoption of a poor, orphaned child, had no idea that he stole a loaf of bread and broke parole

“I could fix him” “I could make him worse” well I could give him two silver candlesticks to help him become an honest man and send him on a path to redemption

Henley Monday -

Henley Monday -

Happy first day back at work after a long weekend! It was a beautiful weekend up here in Chicago, and I hope everyone out there enjoyed the last official bits of summer fully. I know I did.

But maybe you enjoyed a little too fully and now the hours until you can go home and put on sweats and watch So You Think You Can Dance are dragging by? Enter Hugh Jackman looking fooooiiiiiine in this here crisp, white henley. Jackman doesn't get better than this.He is a tender, hyper-masculine PRINCE among mortals.

Keep it up with the TWO-SIDES Hugh; we love you for it.

I can't find my post but anyways re what I said about how jean valjean's relationship with his own body is for the most part never really explicitly touched on but there's huge amounts to be extrapolated from it, I think it's really interesting how physical & related to the body the descriptions we see him give are when he's thinking about confessing & then confessing to marius at the end of the book. obviously there's the more literal one:

text reading " At the moment when he turned round, he perceived that Marius was watching his walk. Then he said, with an inexpressible intonation:
'I drag my leg a little. Now you understand why!'"

where the physical state of his leg proves that he was in the galleys and is sort of a physical manifestation of his status as a convict, but there's also, e.g.:

text reading "Should he take those innocent hands into his tragic hands, with a smile? Should he place upon the peaceful fender of the Gillenormand drawing-room those feet of his, which dragged behind them the disgraceful shadow of the law?"
text reading "'How horrible!' should have touched you with my elbow, which you have a right to dislike, I should have filched your clasps of the hand! There would have existed in your house a division of respect between venerable white locks and tainted white locks;"
text reading "it is hideous to approach those who are healthy, and to touch them in the dark with one's ulcer."

I just think it's really interesting that his feeling of his own taintedness is so physical that it's externalised into his body like this in his descriptions -- particularly when it comes to touching other people
