Yo ho yo ho.
So well put. đ
I am still decompressing from the Arcane finale, and I will be for a very long time, but I just wanted to point out how important Arcane is as a show. Arcane is showing absolutely everyone just what happens when you put genuine care and attention into telling a story, and using the proper mediums to do so. In a media landscape that is saturated with lazy writing, endless parades of live-action remakes, bloated, uninspired CGI graphics, sexism, racism, misogyny, mindless, purposeless violence, hollow characters, weak or nonexistent character arcs, cliched backstories and tired tropes, Arcane has emerged as proof of what storytelling could be.
Arcane has already broken all of Netflix's records, both in the most-watched show on the platform, as well as the highest-rated, and that feels like all the proof we need of what audiences and individuals are starved for. It feels like a revelation of how all of our newfound media technology could and should be used. We don't want animation and CGI to be used just to recreate realism down to the fibers of a shirt or the individual hairs on someone's head. We want animation that is exploratory, revelatory, engaging - animation that shows us a new perspective, that breathes new life into the story it's telling - animation that tells a story in a way that no other form of media could. Beyond the animation, we want a story that means something. We want characters that have depth and nuance, that are morally fallible, even when they're trying to do what's right. We want heroes that are selfish and make mistakes, and we want villains that have a heart and an ocean's worth of depth behind all their villainy. We want stories that leave nothing behind, stories that care enough about the art of the telling that they follow every narrative thread, every character's journey, all the way to the end, bitter or otherwise. We want writers who fight for accurate and fulfilling representation.
And that's what Arcane has given us. I'm not exaggerating when I say I feel like this show has changed me as a person. Maybe that's a little dramatic, but I honestly think it's true. I am in total awe of what they've managed to do in just nine episodes. I am inspired and overwhelmed and hopeful that this is setting the precedent for what storytelling could look like in the future.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
âDude, it was so epic. We spent all weekend at Mikeâs. Eddieâs campaign was one for the ages. I wish we could do that every weekend.â Dustin trails behind Steve while he restocks the shelves with returns.
âIâm sure Ted Wheeler loved you being there all day.â Steve wasnât completely listening but trying to capture enough to stay engaged.Â
When Dustin got on his D&D rants, Steveâs brain always wanted to go into shutdown mode, and it takes active effort to pay attention.
âNot just during the day, Steve. We all spent the night too. Even Eddie and Eddie never does that. Started Friday, and I only got home at 8 pm on Sunday. Iâm telling you, EPIC!â Dustin bounces around and misses when Steve pauses, slamming their bodies together.
Steve hits his elbow on the nearby shelves and groans. âDamnit, dude.â
âSorry, sorry, shit.â Dustin helps Steve into a standing position. âYou ok?â
âYeah, just watch where youâre going.â Steve straightens his vest. âWhat do you mean all weekend?â
âAll weekend.â Dustin shrugs. âWe played all night at Mikeâs after school on Friday. Then had a sleepover and played all day Saturday. Slept over again, and the only reason we stopped when we did was âcause Eddie had to get home and have Sunday dinner with Wayne.â
Steve absorbs that timeline information and tries to figure out when Eddie wouldâve had a date interspersed in there. He knows about Sunday dinner. Itâs the only time Wayne and Eddieâs schedules line up, so definitely not a lie to get away for a date.
âDid Eddie leave at any time?â
âNo? Like in the middle of the campaign?â
âYeah, for an hour or two? Just at any time?â Steve can feel a prickle crawl up the back of his neck.
âNo,â Dustin furrows his brow. âThat wouldâve been weird.â
âHa, yeah, yeah, weird. For sure. But⌠uh, did he mention plans of his getting canceled or something? For this weekend?â Steveâs stomach twists at the implication heâs uncovering.
âNo, heâd been building that campaign for weeks and on the Hellfire calendar just as long. We were forbidden to make plans on those days. He wouldâve banned us for life. Thereâs no way he had plans.â
âOh,â Steveâs stomach drops, and he suddenly needs to escape.
He shoulders around Dustin, slams the videos in his hands down on the counter, surprising Robin where she stands, and stomps toward the employee-only door in the back.
âSteve?â Robinâs voice floats through the door before it shuts behind him.
He paces in the tiny cramped space trying to parce his thoughts together.
He feels so stupid.
Eddie hated it so much that he lied.
His blood boils as frustration seeps through his veins. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. As the back door creeps open, he kicks a nearby folding chair, sending it toppling against the locker-lined back wall.
âFuck.â He covers his face and huffs in anger.
âSteve?â Robinâs voice is soft and cautious.
âHe lied, Rob.â Steve tosses his hands to his sides and stumbles back, leaning against the wall.
âWho?â She props the door open to listen for any customers and slides up to Steveâs side.
Steve nervously glances at the open doorway while chewing on his bottom lip.
âI kicked Dustin out. What happened? I thought you two were talking about his D&D thing this weekend.â She nudges his shoulder with her own.
âEddie,â his voice wobbles. âHe-he lied to me. He told me he had thisâŚthing this weekend. But he didnât. Why would he do that?â He wraps his arms around himself, trying to ignore the burning in his chest.
âWhat thing? That doesnât seem like him.âÂ
âI know, umâŚjust this thing.â He pushes himself away from the wall and starts pacing again. âI thought we wereâŚI donât understand why he would lie. I mean, he coulda talked to me. Told me he wasnât interested. But instead, making up this whole thing as if I couldnât figure it out. Shit.â
âDingus, Iâm gonna need a bit more context here to give valuable advice.â Robinâs eyes follow Steve back and forth.
âNo, you know what? It doesnât matter. Screw it.â He shakes his head and hears the tinkle of the front door. âPerfect, a distraction.âÂ
Steve plasters his fake customer service smile on his face and strides through the back door when his eyes take in the customer.
âStevie!â Eddie throws his arms up and smiles wide.
âGet out.â Steve keeps his voice calm even though his fingers are itching to grab the man by the shirt collar and scream at him for an explanation.
âWhat?â Eddieâs smile slips from his face.
âEddie, maybe the two of you should talk later.â Robin appears behind Steve.
âI donât understand.â Eddie looks between the pair anxiously.
âI donât want to see you right now.â Steveâs entire body is shaking.
âW-what?â
âDonât you have aâŚdate to get to?â
Eddieâs eyes widen. He glances at Robin, seeing a look of confusion strewn across her face, and then he reflects back at Steve. If Steve werenât so honed in on Eddieâs movements, he wouldâve missed the exact moment Eddie felt the weight of his lie crumble down on him.
Eddie nods nervously and backs away. âI didnât-â
Steve shakes his head, his jaw clenched tightly, trying to bite back his anger.
The bell above the front door cuts through all three of them when a mother and child enter the store, breaking the moment. Eddie bows around them and nods to Steve, glancing apologetically at Robin before heading outside.
Steveâs eyes track Eddie until his van has pulled out of the parking lot and driven away.
