My Personal Opinion - Blog Posts

Maybe I should say something.

There was, a few weeks ago, a debate on censorship in my class. I did not participate, unfortunately, but I just wanted to get my personal opinion out.

Nothing should be censored. Ever.

Because when we censor, we are making censoring things acceptable. Say we make one thing censurable. People will abuse that, expand and twist the definition until it covers everything they want censored.

We are not trusted with the privilege to censor. No one should be.

Little disclaimer, as well: This does not apply to blocking topics or words you find not to your taste from your own personal, private feed. This post refers to the deliberate removal or blocking of content from the public as a whole because one person finds it distasteful.

You're damn right. Not everyone in the world wants other people to know that they have a mental illness and in all honesty i think something like should just be kept to your family, friends, and yourself. You shouldn’t have to say “Oh i have depression” just to be accepted and to feel “normal” on this site.

Not everyone wants to say they suffer from something, so let them have the right to keep it to themselves.

also i think it’s a bad social model for people to have to disclose their mental health status in order to be ‘allowed’ to have an opinion on mental health stuff

the culture of this website has normalized outlining your mental health profile (and often also survivor status) in detail on your about, but it also hasn’t normalized simply choosing not to disclose that information, which is scary to me

instead of expecting people to disclose sensitive personal information which they may not want to disclose, I think it’s better to maintain the awareness that we don’t know the full life story of the person we are talking to and understand that just because they don’t mention it in their about, it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
