“ The odds of guessing a four-digit passcode are 1 in 10,000, and tools have been used to crack iPhone codes in the past. Apple says the chances of someone having a similar enough fingerprint to unlock a person’s phone is 1 in 50,000, and a similar enough random face tricking Face ID is 1 in 1,000,000 “

that’s a really funny way of framing it, to make it look like passcodes are weak. you know what’s twice as good as the odds given for fingerprints? a 5 digit passcode! what’s equal to the odds given for Face ID? a 6 digit passcode! every time you add a digit, you multply those odds by 10.

and that’s assuming simple numeric passcodes. the odds of guessing a 4 digit, case-sensitive, alphanumeric passcode would be a 1 in 14.7 million. 5 digits is over 1 in 916 million, 6 digit is 1 in 56.8 billion. if you throw in 32 common symbols, we get 1 in 78 million, 1 in 7.3 billion, and 1 in 689 billion. those numbers climb pretty quickly the more digits you add.

i know these aren’t the only issues with passcodes (like 24% of americans using a variation of just 8 common passcodes), but if you’re trying to push people to biometrics i guess you wouldn’t really care for that nuance anyway

i do have one but, I like doing the math in my head and let someone tell me I’m right.

All those maths teachers who used to remind us that “You won’t be walking around with a calculator in your pocket all the time” must be feeling pretty embarrassed now that everyone has a smart phone.

Correct me if I’m wrong but… I think I found a way to not get tracked while using a smart phone. I’m no expert so take all this with a grain of salt. I’m just saying what I think would work.

I’ll talk about location tracking, then web activity tracking. And when I talk about location tracking, I mean getting a phone that does have gps as well as the second phone that doesn’t. Just incase you get into an emergency and need to be saved.

Also, this isn’t supposed to be advertisement, I’m not getting paid to advertise anything. Even if I sound like I’m trying to sell you something.

Ok so my phone’s location can be tracked by gps, cell phone towers and wifi, right? I’m pretty sure, cell phone towers can find your general location but gps and wifi give a more exact location.

So I get a Benco V80s phone — which doesn’t have gps or cameras — and just remove the battery when I’m not using the phone, and only use public wifis in parking lots without cameras, my location can’t be tracked? You must be thinking “You just said wifi can be used to tracked your location! Why would you use public wifi?”

Well, that’s because I like using the internet, and I need wifi to use internet. Public wifi is better than actual home wifi, you don’t want people knowing your home address after all. Plus, after you’re done, you can disconnect from the wifi and take the battery out. It can’t track you after that so why not go to a public restaurant somewhere far from your home or base of operations?

And now you must be thinking “well what about the cell towers?” They can’t track a phone that isn’t on. And you’re literally taking the battery out, so how is that going to stop you?

Well what about getting online activity tracked? Well if live in the uk, you must be familiar with this. Mass surveillance in the uk allows a lot of government agencies to tract your online activities, or at least that’s what this article says.

Mass Surveillance: What does the UK government know about you?
Comparitech
The UK is a member of Five Eyes and has a history of mass surveillance. Learn what the UK government knows about you and how you can protect

But to answer to that is tor for android. Considering the fact that Benco V80s is an android phone, we could download that. If you don’t know what tor is, it’s a project that wants to, as stated on the website “Advance human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, supporting their unrestricted availability and use, and furthering their scientific and popular understanding.”

Of course, tor isn’t perfect but it’s as private and secure as it can get. And use tor without standing out, read as much as possible form it’s website, look for advice from tor users.

Get a VPN while you’re at it. That’s going to help a lot, I’m not going to write much about it here though. We’ve all seen enough nordVPN ads to know what it’s all about.

Even with all that, don’t go around doing crime. Just don’t, it’s illegal and immoral. That includes “CP” (we all know what that’s supposed to stand for), it’s just wrong. Plus, any criminal things you do on tor will probably make you stand out from the activists, privacy lovers and other normal civilians who aren’t doing crime.

Criminals have been caught using tor before, it’s not perfect, it’s just harder to track. It has more layers of encryption than google and is honestly better than duckduckgo. Read the article bellow for more information on duckduckgo.

Is DuckDuckGo As Private As It Claims?
Medium
DuckDuckGo is a private search engine. It is adamant about spreading privacy around the internet. However, there is one issue we…

So that’s going to at least mostly stop the tracking, what else? Honestly, I don’t know. Just don’t use your personal information online, even when signing up for things. You don’t know if that company tracks or collects data from you after all.

Personally, I fully agree. I'm in a fairly healthy family dynamic (is there even such thing as a perfect family dynamic?) but my phone is still my safe space. Whether it's talking to online friends or texting my boyfriend, screentime limits just make me sneakier, not on my phone less. That being said, I should probably go touch some grass soon

National Technology Day - 11th May 2025 Tech Tok: The Short Attention Span

Instagram: ABC just sent you a reel. Instagram: XYZ just made a post. Snapchat: DSH sent a snap. Do you also see similar notifications pop up on your screen right after you keep your phone aside after hours of doom scrolling? And what do you do? Subconsciously pick up that phone again, reply and get lost in the world of videos and content again! If you think I spied on you, nah. Most of us are on the same boat, credits to the new favourite on the internet, the short-form content. What probably began as TikTok went ahead with Instagram Reels and Youtube shorts, and now, this short-form content greets us good morning before the people around us do. Constant notifications throughout the day disturb our focus and multitasking while watching these videos ruins the concentration of an individual. Though these videos cover more information in less time and are efficient, they affect the human brain and can be dangerous in the longer run. This micro habit develops overtime and subconsciously, we tend to check our phone in void times, as our brain is addicted that it unknowingly switches from one app to another where you spend hours endlessly scrolling videos and double tapping them to like. The human brain is tricked by features like infinite scroll and auto play, making the user spend more and more time on videos. These videos are smartly shot and scripted to grab the attention of the user in the least amount of time and keep them engaged with hooks or infinite loops, smooth transitions etc. Your social media feeds are tailored according to your interests with the help of cookies, and exploring videos on social media platforms is so easy that all you need to do is scroll to move to the next video. Does short form content have a bright side? Oh, yes. Educational videos have been able to perform well, with the aim to share maximum information in the least amount of time. But, not this doesn’t serve as the most efficient method. There is a difference between learning the information and consuming it. Educational reels do not serve their purpose unless the students are able to learn something rather than just watching it for fun. Though we’re advancing in the field of technology and finding new ways to reduce human work, somewhere in the background, these technological advancements are decreasing human efficiency. Our attention span has decreased over time and the ones who once watched a movie for 3 hours or had study sessions for long hours are now easily distracted within an hour. Learning through short form content is superficial and often lacks the core concepts and understanding, as perfection takes time and is not something that can be covered in less than a couple of minutes. Hours and hours of aimless scrolling through social media increases our mental fatigue and decreases our capacity to think critically. Though technology is a historical invention, it is our responsibility that we don’t get lost in the sea of reels and shorts!

I’m Diseased

I’m diseased of adults

Assuming the worst from me

When it is just me

Then they give me a hard time

For nothing

I’m diseased of being a millennial

And adults assuming

That I’m lazy

And addicted to my phone

When it’s just me who just so happens to be different

I’m tired of feeling

Like I’m worthless

And no one will ever

Truly

Fall in love with just me and I them

I’m diseased

Of teachers

Thinking they are better

Because of a degree

At the moment I’m just 1,000 degrees of rage

I don’t want to go to school

I don’t want this factory process

Of being separated

Embarrassed

And torn apart

I’m diseased of being a product

And not a person

The only thing I’ve learned from school

Is that if you don’t want to be bent around

Then keep your mouth shut

I’m diseased with adults

Smoldering my fire

My passion

My,

Will to live and carry on…

White Memorial

I don't like to be

Distracted by the hand held

Devices of now

I just like the quiet

I'd rather just be silent

And just listen to...

Boardwalk bridges that

Sound like a xylophone that

Lead to spiderweb,

Facial masks, that lead to

Nature's cotton candy, that

Are cattail trails, yet

With all these great things

It seems like people don't like,

To listen and watch
