i've come to some sort of revelation

A venn diagram with Phantom Of The Paradise (1974) on one side, and Brazil (1985) on the other. On Phantom's side: Swan stole my music and framed me, Jessica Harper in a horror flick before Suspiria (1977) and Shock Treatment (1981), diegetic musical; Winslow's cantata communicates the themes of the plot, set in "modern" New York (well, uh... 1974), has a clear main villain who represents the music industry; person versus person but equally person versus society. On Brazil's side: Has anybody seen sam lowry? Bob Hoskins playing half of a plumber duo before Super Mario Bros. (1993), just uses the "aquarela do brasil" leitmotif over and over, set "somewhere in the 20th century", doesn't have a villain, only a plethora of minor antagonists (oh and that dream robo-samurai guy); straightforward person versus society. In the middle intersection: Satire/tragic comedy, has an actor who was in Whose Line Is It Anyway UK, follows a silly man's descent into madness from fantasizing about a woman he barely met, all against the backdrop of an insane consumerist hellscape (and no, he doesn't get the girl), box office flop turned cult classic (featuring egregious executive meddling), director worked with Robert De Niro.
