Child Soldiers in Gundam Wing

So everyone knows the young age of the Gundam Pilots across…. pretty much all series in the Gundam franchise… but I’m gonna focus on Gundam Wing for this; namely, on the use of child soldiers in Gundam Wing.

I was wondering about the average age of a soldier in the GW series. It seems the age of some of the highest ranks (Treize, Une, Zechs, Noin) were incredibly young. Treize was only 24, and the others 19. I know the Gundam Pilots were not considered traditional soldiers, so it’s possible 15 year old’s were still considered too young for actual warfare – but then you have volunteer soldiers like Hilde, and she was only 15 too.  The young age of the soldiers seems to be consistent, because you have both Zechs and Noin, who were involved in combat operations – when they were only 13/14 years old.

I think the prevalent use of child soldiers in the AC era shows just how awful things were in the series proper.

Making fun of Gundam Wing will never stop being great but you’re lying if you say you didn’t watch as a kid with eyes full of tears as Relena shouted that she wouldnt like a rose but prefered to wear the blood of the people who killed jer dad, and then pulled a gun out of the bow on the back of her dress and shot Lady Une while yelling THIS IS FOR MY DAD!!! and you felt your soul leave your body and your wig be blown all the way to Japan bc you’d never seen a girl with that much big dick energy

1) Dear lord, this show has a problem with exposition, through both voice over and character dialogue.

2) Thinking the concepts “monarchy” and “pacifism” aren’t mutually exclusive is some naive bullshit if I’ve ever seen it

3) If more evidence of this naiveté is needed, please see the name “Peacecraft.”

Wufei: I AM AT A LOSS FOR WORDS!!

Heero, narrating: Despite being at a loss for words, Wufei yelled at us for the next ten minutes.

Duo, boredly: Why?

Heero: [glaring at Relena from a distance] I don’t know how to flirt with her so she has to die.

Sometimes I can almost bring myself to acknowledge Frozen Teardrop, then I see Quatre’s sister clone and instantly lose all feeling.

Relena: *appears in field of vision*

Heero: *internally* my favorite person has arrived she is pretty and smart and my favorite I must greet her in a manner indicative of my appreciation for her existence

Heero: I’ll kill you.

People who think Gundam Wing is about the pilots crack me up

And kinda make me think you missed the whole point of the show. The pilots are basically ciphers the whole damn show, to be moved about and motivated by the real players of the game. Sure they have personalities and backstories but Gundam Wing is not about the Gundams. Easily the most important pilot is Heero, but he’s there to represent another face to War to provide contrast to the many shades of Peace, particularly Relena’s.

I’m only typing this because I saw a couple of posts on Relena’s tag about how useless she is, which blows my mind because it is Relena’s show. The entire plot is so Relena can grow into the person she needs to be to usher in this new world. Relena has the most character development, Relena is the one that is taught the important lessons. She must learn that absolute pacifism isn’t just about tossing aside weapons but also the anger and mistrust that prompts people to pick them up, and she does. Part of this she learns by herself and part of she must learn by watching the smarter players like Zechs and Treize. In the themes of Peace and War, they are the main three players. Relena is Peace, Treize is War, and Zechs is where the two intersect. Peace is what every character strives for on the show (outside of few already mentioned, plus Dorothy, who is more Chaos IMO) but Relena is the only character who truly figures it out at the end.

The pilots are the embodiment of one of the other themes of the show, which is young people and how they can affect the future and how they’re the eternal hope and blah blah blah - that one gets kind of muddled and is hard to explain. And yes, I will totally grant you that Heero is one of the stars of the show - like, duh. But Heero has his own little microcosm of a storyline that, while it pertains to the main themes, is not as relevant as Relena’s or even Lady Une’s (Lady Une in fact probably has the best representation of what the show is trying to say.) The other pilots development is summed up in one sentence: Wufei forgives himself. Quatre becomes the leader he is meant to be. Duo stops running. Trowa learns how to get outside his head.

But one of the main plotlines of the show is to watch and recognize and learn from Relena’s character development. And let me be brutally frank, if you didn’t catch it, then I seriously question your intelligence.
